Since two weeks my Firefox just keeps crashing. Sometimes during loading an website sometimes even if I did not do anything for several minutes. It started with version 20.0.0 and continues with 20.0.1. Disabling all extensions and plugins did not help. The crashes still occur in safe mode. Resetting Firefox did not help. Reinstalling neither. I scanned my computer with two different antivirus programs. All other applications work fine and I'm working the whole day on my computer in lots of different programs... It would be great if you can tell me more about the reason so I can use my favorite browser again, thank you!

Hello,

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems

Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL

Thank you for the reply.

I already switched graphic acceleration off days ago - no changes.

I also updated my nvidia driver to the latest official version - no changes.

The links you posted mentioned one thing I haven't tried before: set "webgl.disabled" to true. I just did that - did not help, here is a new crash report: bp-ce46657a-d456-4831-8804-1ae472130416

Do you see it is a specific matter with the graphics driver in my case in the crash reports or is it just an asumption because it is a common problem?

Thank you for your help!

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

As stated in my inital post I already scanned my whole computer with two different antivirus programs. Norton and Mcaffee.

Please have a look in the posted crash reports.

Anti-malware scanning is different than Anti-virus scans.

TDSSKiller AntiRootkit Utility did not find anything. Microsoft Safety Scanner did not finy anything either.

(neither did Nortin Internet Security and the mcafee web scanner)

Any further ideas?
