The Java plugin does not work on my Firefox v14.0.1 after I did download and installed the update. I visited www.java.com/en/ and click the link 'Do I have Java?', then click on the button called 'Verify Java Version' after 5 minutes the blue circle is still spinning. After 30 minutes nothing else happen. And the ´Error. Click for details´ message is shown. I tried Opera v12 and Safari v5 too. Using Vista and Win 7 with Firefox v 14 and Java 7. Also ´https://www.mozilla.org/nl/plugincheck/´ says that my Adobe Acrobat v10.1.0 is old, but the update does nothing and same message appears. Security levels on minimal, disable will cost my internet connection.

Is the Java plugin present in Tools > Add-ons > Plugins?

Is there a Java key in the registry that make Firefox find it?

@cor-el: Yes, as "Java(TM) Platform SE 7 U5 10.5.0.6 Next Generation Java Plug-in 10.5.0 for Mozilla browsers"

I did download the offline installation package again and even with using another webbrowser Java does not work. I get always a never ending animation from the Java logo. And later some errors too. I tried on another computer and still the same problems.

Java download package is corrupted and/or online test does not work. Now Firefox does not remember my last used tabs. Firefox does not close and is still running on the background. Must use the Taskmanager to make forced closing.

When a new plugin is installed and Firefox is started the next time, the plugin must be enabled by default?!

Note that Oracle has released a Java update to fix a security vulnerability in Java 7U6 and 6U34 and lower versions that every user should apply.

See:

Try to use "Firefox/File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the title bar.

I tried top copy the files called "npoji610.dll" and "npjpi170_05.dll" from "C:\Program Files\Java\JRE7\" to "C:\Program Files\Mozilla\Firefox\Plugins\" Seems to work in WinXP with Firefox v14.0.1. Now Java will appear twice in Firefox's Addon manager. Test page "www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp" will work now. Also found their newest update (Java 7U7) and give it a try.

@cor-el, Firefox is still running after closing the normal ways: File > Exit and the red "x" in the upper right corner. Can not start Firefox again. I must use the Taskmanager from WinXP and all the last visited sites in multiple tabs gets lost. Strange, more other problems by this problem...

This can be caused by a plugin that isn't closing down properly, so you can do a test to see if you can clearly identify a misbehaving plugin (or extension).

@cor-el, The Firefox is not closing problems seems solved without doing something. So strange, like other problems did appear with the need to update of all the plug-ins listed on "www.mozilla.org/en/plugincheck/". I can not visit some websites and sometimes an email will not send anymore. Now Firefox will really close, after clicking on the "x" in the right upper corner.

Also I found out that on other computers the Java problem does exists. Installing the update does not solve the problem. The "www.mozilla.org/en/plugincheck" says Java is up to date, when visiting this website. Add-on manager from Firefox shows Java too. Java is by default enabled in OS and webbrowser. After about 1 minute there is nothing to see, only a box with an error message. Uninstall all possible listed Java versions in Software in Control Panel and then install the current version with the yet downloaded offline installer does not solve anything. Reinstalled Java up to 3 times. Used 3 different computers (Win XP, Vista, Win 7) and different webbrowsers (Firefox, Safari, Opera). The Java installers are corrupted, do not write the correct data and/or settings to the supposed fining locations. I dislike to edit the Registry manual, therefor setup and installers are created. Problems appear after updating to the 10 version series from Firefox and Java 7 version series.

Finally I got Java detected in my Firefox on WinXP. These tests are used: www.mozilla.org/en/plugincheck/ www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp www.browserspy.dk/java.phpl www.javatester.org/version.htm Plugin-check from Mozilla says my Java version is up to date, by Java.com says it is not. Few days later the Mozilla Plugin-check marks my installed Java version orange too. Also it marks Quicktime orange, but can not update and uninstall it because installation fails on the Apple Software Update. I found several Java version 6 items in the Software list from Control Panel. Some of them have an uninstall button, but I get an error message when try to uninstall them. Others do not have this button.

Java 7 Update 5 does not work on Win 7 and Vista! Java 7 Update 6 does not work on Win 7 and Vista! Java 7 Update 7 does not work on Win 7 and Vista! Downloaded from Java website with Firefox 14 on each PC, then installed after Firefox is closed first. And even with Firefox 15 there will nothing happen. Java icon does not appear in system tray too. Always more errors do appear! Before updating Java I did not have these problems so far. Java did work after the recent Firefox version at that moment was installed.

Updating does not work and gives more problems!

Firefox does not load websites correctly or aborts on halfway. Get empty / white parts after scrollbar is moved. Firefox will freeze / wait on something too, give slow reactions. If a problem seems to be solved, then another problem will appear. Now I can not see Youtube movies. I get only a black box and there is no play button. Quicktime does not play assigned media types, gets an error message. Reinstall / Update does not solve the problem. Firefox Add-on manager does not show my installed add-ons and extensions anymore. Can not visit add-one website too.

This issue seems to stem from the ASK.com toolbar that is installed with Java's update, we fixed all our speed issues by simply uninstalling the ask software from the machines with this issue.

This corrected the issues on EVERY machine.

Hope this helps

@mfoote, No ´Ask.com´ things are shown or will appear while running the installer. Download offline install package from Java.com website.

@all others, Update/install/restore/repair/reinstall the installation of Java 7u6 does not solve anything. Even uninstall first too. Update to Java 7u7 or Java 7u8 does nothing as well. Use another Win7 PC and I did download last version from Java.com and still nothing. Java 7u7 gets detected on WinXP with Firefox v14x. Java 6u36 will work on Win 7 and Vista. Strange. I need Java mostly for some online photo order websites. They said I have no Java installed but I do.

Did you look in windows control panel under installed programs and verify ask.com toolbar is not installed? We went through the same thing, uninstalled java and reinstalled it ect, the problem is, ask.com toolbar does not uninstall with java removal... our issues stemmed from the initial update via the java console installing the ask software.

On a side note, our java still worked... it just took it upwards of 2-3 minutes to initialize. removing the ask.com toolbar software that installed with the initial java update corrected our load times.

We had a VERY hard time duplicating it because our devs would always uncheck the extra install stuff.

Ask removal Instructions

@mfoote, there will no things from "Ask.com" installed during the Java installation. There do no one exist, otherwise a security scan will remove it. You must remove the checkmark from the "Ask.com" checkbox. As seen on your screenshot. Prevent nasty software gets installed with other software.

It seems that Windows Installer (MSI) is the problem. Can not install or uninstall Apple Quicktime, Apple Safari, Apple Application Support, Apple Software Update and Microsoft Silverlight either. I got always error messages and the product is not uninstalled or updated. WinXP does install Java version 7 series. Win 7 and Vista does not, so I remove any Java related items in Software list and downgrade to latest version 6 update 35. This one passes the Java tests. Please do not use MSI anymore, but use real ´Setup.exe´.
