also, if i simply hit update and get it done, will that opera-like 'Firefox' menu show up or will i have to do a clean install to get that?

If you do the update from inside Firefox your bookmarks, history, preferences, etc. will all be there. Active logins should mostly work as well. The majority of your plugin and extensions should work as well, though you might have to update them after updating Firefox.
On Windows XP the Firefox menu isn't default, however if you want it you can always turn it on by going to View>Toolbars and unchecking the Menu Bar

Be aware that if you've used the current profile before with a Firefox 4+ version there there may have been leftover files from that 4+ version that may be causing problems.

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

as regards the menu bar, i installed FF 7 on a some other pc a long time back and found the menu bar didn't show up in spite of checking the option (i figured since it looks like opera, enabling or disabling it should be more or less like opera).
will give it a try again.

no, this isn't the same profile as that used with FF 5.
i dont recall whether i backed it up before updating (and rolling back) back then or simply started with a fresh profile after rolling back -- can only recall this isn't the same one used in FF 5.. so shouldn't be a bother...
as regards the 'problems' i had, it was only to go with google related sites.
if i opened gmail, google.com etc , the page would open but i wouldn't be able to interact with the entire window including the file menu etc at all. nothing would work. mouse clicks, keyboard shortcuts etc. it did not freeze. it 'locked' itself (comparable to using the textbox islocked option instead of isvisible or isenabled options when programming)
however, if i had two windows open and opened a google site in one of those, the window with the google site would lock up while the other window would continue to work normally until it hit an el goog site.
anyway i think 'Tylerdowner' 's answer covers what i'm looking for, though yours is illuminating too when it comes to profile management.
