Why can't I minimize more than 2 notepads in FF? I used to be able to minimize as many notepads as I wanted. FF must have done an update & now I can't do that anymore. Is there a setting I can change that will enable me to do that?

  1. Question

Why can't I minimize more than 2 notepads in FF? I used to be able to minimize as many notepads as I wanted. When I do research on a topic I keep many notepads open until I am finished. FF must have done an update & now I can't do that anymore. Is there a setting I can change that will enable me to do that again?

Also at that time, the length of sentence I am typing changed. It doesn't seem to have any limit to how far it can extend to the right.

Please help. I am not very techy & don't understand Computerese. Please explain in everyday English. Thanks in advance,

Posy,

Great to hear that your problem is finally resolved.

Regarding the 2nd query that you have raised, it's not possible to have the program running if you SHUT down the computer (it's like saying that you wish the light bulb to keep shining despite switching it OFF). When you shutdown the machine, you cut off the power supply ... so there is no way that the current status be maintained. When the start the computer again next time it starts over everything afresh.

But there are 2 options that may help you with your issue:-

1. SAVE your changes before you close the program, and next time when you start the computer choose

File ->Open (This way your work is preserved and you need not start afresh next time onwards)

2. Instead of shutting down the computer, choose to HIBERNATE. When you hibernate (and NOT SHUT down) the current state is preserved. That means if you leave notepad running it will remain in the same state when you start next your machine next time.

I don't understand what you mean with notepads in Firefox.

Can you attach a screenshot to clarify what you mean?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed the maximum file size (1 MB).

Posy,

Perhaps you mean the individual tabs where you open websites (i think it is those to which you are referring as 'notepads')

The current behaviour is that you open new tabs inside the same browser widow (this you do by clicking on the + symbol next to the current tab)

If you minimise it then the entire browser/window will get minimised and you will have to open a new browser/window.

If there are too many tabs that you wish to open, then RIGHT click on any tab and choose the option 'Pin as App tab' this will shorten the length of the tab and you can open many more tabs in the same browser/window. To undo that, again RIGHT click on that particular and this time choose 'Unpin Tab'

Let us know if this helps you ...

Hi Prabhuti,

Thank you for your reply. It was very thorough. I really appreciate you trying to help me.

Unfortunately, I was not talking about tabs. I am not very tech savvy. When I am researching something I use the Notepad feature on Windows computers. I cut & paste the data I want to keep as notes on that topic. I use Notepads because I don't have to deal with settings to change etc. in features like Word etc. It's just a blank page. I don't understand computer terms so the simpler the better for me.

In the past I could continue opening them for each part of my research that I wanted to keep open until I had finished my research & didn't need them anymore. At times I have had 7 or 8 Notepads open.

But recently something changed & I am only able to keep open (minimize) 2 Notepads. At the same time the limit on how far I could type to the right also disappeared. It just went on & on.

The only thing I can think that might have caused these changes was an update on Firefox. Maybe it was something else but I am not knowledgeable enough to figure out what it is.

I like Firefox but the continual changes & versions are really hard for people like me who don't understand computers & the jargon that goes with it.

Thanks again for your effort to help me.

Hi cor-el,

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry I don't know how to do screen shots. If you want to see what I'm talking about.....there is a an icon in Windows that looks like a note book. Open it up, type a few words & minimize it. Then go & open another notebook do the same thing. Then try to do it a third time. You won't be able to minimize a third one.

That's my problem. If you can minimize more than two & also use the same version of Firefox then my problem is not Firefox I guess.

Sorry I am not tech knowledgeable enough to do a screenshot. Thanks for trying to help me.

Posy,

for the typing limit thing there is something called 'word wrap' that must have got ticked off. You can select that option again. With that option selected you can go right as per the size of your window. If you resize that then it will automatically readjust

To select the word wrap option

1. Click the "Format" menu and select "Word Wrap".

2. The scroll bar at the bottom of the Notepad window will disappear. A check will appear next to the "Word Wrap" option on the Format menu.

3. Word Wrap wraps the text in your text document so it doesn't scroll across the entire screen.

Not sure why you are not able to minimise more than 2 notepads (i think that some logical mistake is happening rather than Firefox doing something to it). As an alternative I can suggest that you try using 'textpad' application. It is like notepad but much better (you get to open new windows/tabs in the same application hence the issue of minimising will go away all together)

Try downloading it from here ... http://www.textpad.com/download/index.html

Hi Prabhuti,

Thank you for your help. You are going to think I am unbelievably stupid but I can't find the Format menu. This is a brand new laptop for me. It's a Windows 7 computer & I'm not familiar with all the features yet. I've searched every where and even looked on help but I can't find it. I remember having it on a previous computer.

I do have a Format menu on Thunderbird my email program. Did you mean in Firefox?

I did look at the Textpad program but it looks like it's more involved than i want to deal with. I just am so non-techy & especially I don't understand the jargon that goes with it. It's like reading a foreign language to me. I am always spending an inordinate amount of time just trying to figure out how to do something new. That's the reason I like Notepad. It's so simple. I don't have to learn anything to use it.

Thank for all your efforts to help me.

Maybe you find the Wrap setting in the Edit menu in Notepad if there isn't a Format menu.
I'm on Linux and can't check that out.

You can also take a look at Notepad2:

Hi cor-el,

I did find a format menu in Notepad & there was word wrap in there -there was already a check mark next to it. The lack of a limit on typing happens outside of Notepad also.

All of these things seem to have happened at the same time. That's why I thought it was due to an FF update or something like that.

I looked at the Notepad 2 program. It sounded like it might be simple but the more I read the less I understood. There were multiple downloads & a lot of other stuff I did not understand. I couldn't figure out which one to download. I think it's a no go unless someone can explain it to me & show me how it can be used simply.

Thanks for your help & suggestions.

All I need to know is how to get FF to let me stack up my many Notepads as I want & stop my typing from continuing on forever.

Does anyone know why my computer is doing this & how I can change it back to the way it used to work?

I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me. I'm totally at a loss.

Thanks,

Posy,

The simplest solution that i can suggest for this word wrap thing is that:-

press enter key when you have typed the desired amount of stuff on a particular line. That will take you to a new line :)

Also have a look at

2. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Notepad-frequently-asked-questions

3. http://techie-buzz.com/collections/10-amazing-things-you-can-do-with-notepad.html

Or you may also switch to 'Wordpad'. Another text editing program present inside windows itself. A very short 4 line description as to how to get started is present here:- http://www.computerbasicsguide.com/winapp/wordpad.html

As for computers, since it is almost everywhere/all the fields it will be good that you get friendly with it (Learning how to use a computer is different from trouble shooting. There is nothing technical in knowing how to use it, so you need not be have any premonitions about it).

I am not sure how much computer literate you are, but from the view point of using it, here are a few websites from where you can get started (besides this almost 80% of the features work the same way irrespective of which version of OS you are using, so if it used to work in XP then it will in all probability work on Windows 7 also in the same way)

Hi Prabhuti,

Thank you so much for all your suggestions & helpful links to get help. I am not very computer literate. I have taken many classes over the years I've had a computer but I am still only a beginner.

I want to tell you that I found a solution to my problem. I finally realized that maybe FF was not the problem but Wind. 7 on my new comp. I went on the 7 Forums & found another person who had the same problem & the answer was simple all I had to do was to right click on the Notepad icon & it would bring up a new Notepad & I could open & minimize as many as I want. I had moved the Notepad icon to my taskbar from the Start menu when I got my new computer.

I have one more question for you. The notepad 2 program was mentioned there along with several others. I think it was about that prog. that someone said that it could open many notepads & when you closed the comp. the notepads would not disappear. Do you know if it was that program? Also is it possible to use that program the same way as I used the original Notepad? There are so many technical options on that program that I didn't understand. All I want to do is open the Notepad & copy & paste my notes in it & minimize them. Not losing them if I shut down the comp. would be real benefit to me. I believe that is the same prog. you recommended to me. Since you seem to understand tech things I thought maybe you could tell me if that is possible?

Thank you so much for all your help.
