I upgraded to new firefox 6 and there is this awful Unsorted Bookmarks in the Bookmark Menu. If is forced at the bottom which to me serves no purpose and is annoying. There seems to be no way to delete it or move to a location that you chose. It is nice to have new features, some people may like this, but to make them static so people who do not like this can't turn them off is not what firefox use to be like, it seems the are getting to be more like internet explorer. If there is a way to move or remove it it would be helpful.

Sorry, that folder was added to that drop-down in Firefox 6.0 because other users complained that the Unsorted Bookmarks folder wasn't in that drop-down, and they didn't want to have to access that folder through the Sidebar or the Library window. Goes to show that you can't satisfy all users, all the time.

The Menu Editor extension hasn't worked for the Bookmarks menu since the Firefox 2 versions. IMO, it was never properly updated for the changes made to the bookmarks system for Firefox 3+ versions. We're probably lucky that it works at all this many years after the original developer stopped updating it himself.

This works for me at hiding for me in 6.0 in both the Menu Bar drop-down and the BTB Bookmarks button (doesn't remove the separator there). Either add it as a new script in Stylish or to a userChrome.css file you create.

 @namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);

/* Hide "Unsorted Bookmarks" in bookmarks toolbar menu button and the menu bar drop-down */
#menu_unsortedBookmarks,
#bookmarksMenuPopup > menuseparator[builder="end"]
{display:none!important;}

#BMB_unsortedBookmarks {
  display: none !important }

I combined this user script with the script mentioned in one of the comments about this user script.

The Unsorted Bookmarks folder has been a part of Firefox bookmarks since Firefox 3.0, it's not "new". The difference in Firefox 6.0 is that Unsorted Bookmarks now appears in the Bookmarks Menu Bar drop-down menu, where previously it only appeared in the Bookmarks Sidebar and the Library window.

And that's annoying. Can it be removed from the Bookmarks menu. It takes up screen space. I never use it.

The "Bookmarks Toolbar" folder is also in the Bookmarks menu and has a drop-down menu on it. The "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder shown at the bottom of the Bookmarks menu is strictly a link to displaying the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder in the Library List. I never use the Bookmarks menu to look at bookmarks, nor the bookmark buttons, preferring the bookmarks sidebar ("Ctrl+B") or Library List ("Ctrl+Shift+B").

As far as removal of the single line goes, the "Menu Editor" extension does not touch the Bookmarks menu, so I think the problem is resolved by Ed's reply even if it is not the answer you were hoping for. Firefox did place a bookmark separator before it to help with the distinction.

My interpretation but for Ed's reply and the number of people reporting similar problems would have been an additional nesting and duplication that would be seen in the sidebar structure, along with duplicate search hits for everything by importing the same bookmarks, because all of the folders would have been added to the bottom of and within the Bookmarks Menu folder.

I was never a fan of the side bar and turned that off when implemented, so the problem is it is in the drop down, with no way to turn it off, i no there is a sepeartor, but both are annoying, i would like an option to turn them off or remove them from teh drop down. I did check the menu editor program as soon as i saw this, and it does not have the bookmarks options to change which is a a shame.

Get rid of it. I don't like and I don't want it. I did not have the problem before I upgraded to 6.0. You would think after all these years I would know not to upgrade when things are working perfectly. Software writers insist on screwing up a perfectly good program, just because they can. Please get rid of this annoying piece of crap.

Isn't the main bookmarks menu unsorted? Why do we need to have an unsorted bookmarks folder in a menu that is already unsorted? That's like having a wallet inside of a wallet to hold your "unsorted money"... whoever thought of a mandatory "unsorted bookmarks" folder in the bookmarks folder just wasn't thinking. The feature is useless and takes up valuable space. I'm disappointed in Mozilla.

@ TGDF324 Isn't the main bookmarks menu unsorted?

Firefox 3 created three folders within bookmarks with intent as far as I can tell

  • Bookmarks Toolbar as a main bookmark folder instead of "Personal Bookmarks" folder, probably so people unaccustomed to bookmarks could find it easier, but makes it different from the other browsers.
  • Bookmarks Menu to match what was in the Bookmarks menu on Menu bar, this would be the old way where people organize bookmarks into folders. You can still have unorganized bookmarks at the bottom of the Bookmarks Menu as before.
  • Unsorted Bookmarks, The intent here was that bookmarks added with the bookmark star on location bar would get added here by default and with tagging you never needed to organize bookmarks at all (every tag on a bookmark means another bookmark record). Separate file may be of help to some people and confusing to others. Tagging one's own bookmarks in Firefox as single user is a farce makes for a very confused bookmark dialog and for about a year people on beta did not have easy access to the "keyword" as a developer tried to eliminate its use but it is built right into the bookmark record.

There were a lot of complaints about not showing Unsorted Bookmarks in the bookmarks menu, even had at least one extension to add it them and I expect that would be really add them not toss you into the Library List.

You say that other users complained about unsorted bookmarks not appearing in that menu, and you say it like it is our issue for thinking that this thing here is annoying. But people, what is wrong with making it an OPTION!? Can't we just at some point opt out that we don't WANT this unsorted bookmarks folder?

Also, the reply about fixing it up by editting userchrome.css. That is no fix because while it makes it disappear, it also breaks the ability to scroll inside the menu. A fix is when you create a solution without creating more problems.

Developers of Firefox, please, I urge you to just let users have CHOICE! Let US decide if we want the folder there or not, don't make it UNREMOVABLE or otherwise break the menu when you fix it by some weird work around.

182 of us have this problem. Is Mozilla listening? The maddening thing about this is the delete button is right there. If only it was active. Mozilla could fix this in less than a minute. Give us the control. Give the users the choice. Isn't that what Firefox is all about? We hate IE because of just this sort of thing. Come on Firefox, do the right thing. Activate the delete option. All the bookmarks are unsorted. Most of us know how to deal with that.

Well well well, some one deleted an entire post of mine because my advice was to delete Mozilla and move to GOOGLE CHROME. Well the complaint count between this and the other thread on the topic now numbers 372 with 219 NEW THIS WEEK ALONE. Mozilla still does not listen, and frankly it appears they could not possibly care less about the actual users of their FIRE FOX browser. Keep up the good work Mozilla keep deleting my posts and I'll keep making life uncomfortable for you by mentioning the alternative GOOGLE CHROME in each and every reply I give, until YOU see fit to fix the problem. Not by forcing the end users to navigate a set of byzantine directions to fix what is YOUR problem

The problem here is that Firefox needs more user intervention to keep bookmarks tidy than do some other browsers and if it is to be more popular with unsophisticated users this needs to be addressed. So by default there should be no unsorted bookmarks and there should be a reminder to sort them if this cannot be made automatic. We do want more people to use Firefox, don't we?

Forget the unsorted bookmarks it was always there just in a different spot & as far as the drop down side menu for the bookmarks 'take it away' its a never used item..

However what happened to the ability to export/save bookmarks to a file that function is gone. I wanted to export my bookmarks to a file & save it to my desktop & now the function is GONE in FF6.. I am starting to get over FF

You can still export the bookmarks to an HTML file if you is what you mean,

@ angered As a retired systems analyst I wanted to stay retired & just be an end user & not have to do too much thinking but times have changed.. I was always happy with FF & bragged about it to everyone until 4/5/6 then I got frustrated which happens easily.. Tonight I downloaded Chrome & will test it for awhile to see if it suits my needs & is faster than FF & doesn't hang up like FF has been doing.. **sigh** Keep the faith ♥

From the very top of the screen, the Apple menu line, go to bookmarks ---> show all bookmarks. In the left panel, you'll see "unsorted bookmarks." If necessary, click the triangle to expand it. The first item in the expansion should be a folder called "bookmarks." Highlight (single click) that, then from the Apple menu line on top, click edit --->delete. Then the unsorted bookmarks folder will be empty, so at least when you search your bookmarks there won't be two of everything.
