I can add the printer icon to the toolbar, but is there a button or extension to select which printer, not print directly?

Printer selection is done in the "Print" window, which is seen when you initiate printing with the Print button (or File > Print or {Ctrl + P}), and you have to print the page while that Print window is open for a change in printers to take place. Close that window without printing and Firefox will return to the previous setting. Sorry, there isn't any other way of changing printers in Firefox.
That Print window will show every time you go to print something in Firefox 3.6+ versions, the option to suppress that window from appearing and the user to be able to print "directly" was removed. (Yes, you could do that in 3.5.x and earlier versions, but no longer as of 3.6.)

I don't know why I didn't see this, but this is what I was asking for in my question. I guess I never recognized the change and still thought it worked the "old" way. My bad.
Hmm, all very well but in my case Firefox isn't selecting my default printer, which means I have to change it every time I want to print something.
I've even tried changing the default printer in the hope that FF will select the 'other' one (the one I really want to use) but to no avail.
Cool City, I have found the answer provided to me by the-edmeister does work and if you change the printer AND actually print it should change from your default printer. Are you using version 3.6 or greater of Firefox? If not upgrade to the latest version. The printer icon does cause a pop-up allowing you to change the printer every time, but does default to the last printer used in Firefox.
My problem as well. I've changed the default printer and documents from the word processor now print with the new printer. Documents on Firefox, however, default back to the old printer. I have to set the new printer manually each time I go to print a document. How does one permanently change the printer used by Firefox?
P.S. I have tried printing after manually changing the printer in the Print window, as Gyle suggested, but the next time I go to print a document, it still defaults to the old printer. I'm using the newest version of FF.
