Exactly *which* plugin is it complaining about?

I occasionally see the little drop-down message alert bar thingy appear at the top of my browser window, informing me that "additional plugins are required to display all the stuff on this page". No problem, I think, this is not new ground for me, and I click the install button that it conveniently tacks onto the right end of the bar.

A popup then tells me that it couldn't find the plugin. There's a link that lets me "search manually", but the window it displays is a generic one that has nothing to do with the specific plugin it failed to find.

Here's the thing: at no time does it let me know WHAT PLUGIN it's trying and failing to find! I have no idea which plugin a random page is using. I'd love to be able to decide for myself, and install it manually, but it never gives a name!

Can you post a link to such a website?

You can usually see in the page source which plugin is needed.

Not one in front of me at the moment, no. It's usually some subtopic on a discussion forum, so not "on demand". Next time I stumble across such I'll post a link here if I think of it.

As for looking in the page source, it's not going to be worth the trouble to page through generated HTML looking for... whatever kind of markup is used for loading plugins.

The answer, I guess, is "no, Firefox can't display that information at this time". Which still qualifies as a good legit answer, so thank you for that.  :-)

Sometimes you get such an alert if there is content that can be handled by the QuickTime plugin, but that MIME type isn't selected in the QuickTime Preferences.

You seem to have all commonly used plugins except for media files the new WMP plugin.

The plugin which cannot be found in my case is:

application/getplusplusadobe16299

That is the Adobe Download Manager. That extension usually gets installed if you install or update an Adobe product (Flash or PDF Reader), but that extension should be removed after the next Firefox start. You don't need the ADM (Getplus) extension and you can remove those plugins if you see any on the about:plugins page.

Thanks for the reply and the links. Some digging around as a result led me to disabling the Firefox plug in which I had. I then tried to install the Adobe update which was required. This led to a reinstallation of the plug in and then the update. all sorted now thanks to you!
