Please read this and tell me how it went.

It is unclear what you mean by "fresh install". If you simply reinstalled Firefox, the issue would only have disappeared if it was an issue with the files inside the program folder of Firefox. Which is rarely the case. If you erased your data (which is not necessary, since you can easily create a brand new Firefox profile - see how) when reinstalling, then the issue would only have disappeared if it was an issue with an extension, theme or some setting or corrupt file in your Firefox profile or program folder. This leaves out plugins, which are also add-ons, and can cause problems for some users. Plugins are not installed/uninstalled from inside browsers (this is common across all browsers, unfortunately, not just Firefox), and, as such, reinstalling or creating new profiles won't change them at all. In fact, it may even re-enable previously disabled plugins, if you create a new profile.

Again, please follow my instructions to the line and tell me how it went. I can't be of much help if you don't cooperate with me. Please don't be afraid of trying what I tell you to try, as the procedures I ask you to follow are safe and can be undone, if necessary. Unless I say otherwise, which has not been the case up to this point.

All right! I first created a new profile without any add-ons or plug-ins. My download/memory problem did not appear anymore.

I returned to my original profile and started disabling and enabling plugins and add-ons. The problem goes away when I disable just the Firebug (1.5.4).

When I enable it again (without any other plug-ins or add-ons) downloading starts eating up memory.

I have now Windows XP (SP3) and FF 3.6.8 which was updated during tests, but otherwise the same combination so I believe this was the cause.

I get this every time I try to use the new version of Firefox. Previously I've been using Firefox for years with no problem.

I did as Morbus suggested and went to FF 3.6 in safe mode. Everything worked fine. In safe mode, I could download Adobe 9, which I did. Then turned FF back in safe and could still download pdfs. Just updated to FF 3.6.8 and pdfs and everything else seems to work. I am keeping my fingers crossed this is the fix from heaven!

Firefox was great what happened?

Yes , I have installed 3.6.12 and it crashed no matter whether there were extra plugins or not . I fresh installed a few times , surfed the forums for various fixes , all to no avail . Down loaded various malware programs , scanned for trojans , tried it on another PC . I am all worn out with trying to solve this . I have come to two conclusions . Firstly I am not alone by any means . There are a LOT people out there who are extremely frustrated with FF . Secondly I feel that FF is just pernickety and or unstable . [You can be doing nothing for a good while at your PC and it will just crash by itself ].
