When I open firefox in Linux, it looks strange. The back, forward, and all those buttons are grey so I cannot click them. None of my bookmarks appear. And when I go to a website like Gmail to sign in, I can fill in my information, but I cannot click the sign in button. I tried erasing the .parentlock file and restarting everything. I also tried clearing the cache. I also moved the sessionstore.js file out of the folder. It seems like it was last modified the last time Firefox ran normally.

This happened

Every time Firefox opened

Hello Ben.

First of all, and although possibly not related to your problem, I will remind you that the version of Firefox you are using at the moment as been discontinued and is no longer supported. Furthermore, it has known bugs and security problems. I urge you to update to the latest version of Firefox, for maximum stability, performance, security and usability. You can get it for free, as always, at www.getfirefox.com.

As for your issue, you may be having a problem with some extension or plugin that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?

Thank you for the suggestions. While I am meanwhile trying to figure out how to update firefox in linux (I am not sure if I can without administrator access), I tried erasing my places. . .files as suggested in the link cor-el posted.

This fixed one problem, which was firefox not loading my homepage upon opening. Also the bookmarks seem to work now.

However a huge problem is that I still cannot log into websites. Any site where I have to enter in a username/password and then click "sign in" does not work, as I can't even click the sign in button.

That can be a problem with signons.sqlite. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Password_Manager (Troubleshooting)

I went to Tools - then Add-ons - then Plug ins and selected Find Updates and both arrows came back instantly. Hope this helps.
