Different conflicting settings

I don't know how this happened, But I have two different for Firefox settings under "General heading"- says "default search" start-page and heading "Search" - says Firefox is search. I did not think that could be? how do I resolve this issue? I would like to make Start-page my default search engine in both. It has been very confusing.

Hi Don, no worries — this is actually a common point of confusion, and nothing is broken 🙂

What you’re seeing is two different settings that control different things, even though they both mention “search”.

Here’s the simple explanation:

Settings → General → Default search engine This controls which search engine is used when you search from the address bar (the URL bar at the top).

Settings → Search → Search engine This controls which search engine appears in the Search page settings and search shortcuts. Firefox lists “Firefox” here because it’s the name of the built-in search service, not a separate engine.

So it’s normal for these to look different, even though they work together.

How to set Startpage as your default everywhere

To reduce the confusion and make Startpage the one you use:

Go to Settings → Search

Under Default Search Engine, select Startpage

Make sure Startpage is enabled in the Search Shortcuts list

Once that’s done:

Typing in the address bar will use Startpage

Searching from Firefox menus will also use Startpage

There isn’t actually a way (or need) to make both sections display identically — Firefox just organizes them differently in the UI.

If you’re still seeing searches go somewhere other than Startpage after this, let us know where you’re typing the search from and we can narrow it down 👍
