Why does this happen, and is there a way/setting to correct it?

1. Check for the Status Bar

While Firefox no longer has a traditional status bar at the bottom, you can enable the "Status Panel" that shows some information when you hover over links or during downloads.

Hover Over Links: When you hover over a link, the URL will appear in the bottom left corner of the window. If this is not visible, it may be due to the window being maximized or other UI elements covering it.

2. Customize the Toolbar

You can customize the Firefox toolbar to add useful features:

Open Firefox and right-click on an empty space in the toolbar.
Select "Customize Toolbar..." from the context menu.
In the customization window, you can drag and drop items to the toolbar, including the "Downloads" button, which can show download progress.

3. Enable the Status Bar with an Extension

If you prefer a traditional status bar, you can use an extension to replicate that functionality:

Go to the Firefox Add-ons page: Firefox Add-ons
Search for extensions like "Status-4-Evar" or "Classic Theme Restorer" (if available) that can restore some status bar functionality.
Install the extension and follow the instructions to configure it.

4. Check Full-Screen Mode

If you are in full-screen mode, the status bar and other UI elements may be hidden:

Press F11 to toggle full-screen mode off and see if the status bar appears.

5. Reset Firefox

If the issue persists and you suspect it may be due to a configuration problem, you can reset Firefox to its default settings:

Click on the menu button (three horizontal lines) in the upper right corner.
   Select "Help."
   Choose "More Troubleshooting Information."
Click on the "Refresh Firefox" button. This will reset Firefox to its default state while saving your bookmarks and passwords.

6. Update Firefox

Ensure that you are using the latest version of Firefox:

Click on the menu button and select "Help."
Choose "About Firefox." This will check for updates and install them if available.
