For some time Thunderbird crashes quite often. One reason seems to be Chinese characters in an email I try to open. But it also crashes on other occasions. Several times a day.

The problem is solved. It was a defective SSD. I replaced the SSD and have no more problems.

The crash report refers to NotoSansCJK-Bold.ttc and libfreetype.so.6. For the former, you might try installing the latest NotoSansCJK fonts: https://github.com/googlefonts/noto-cjk while for the latter see this for a possible fix:

Thank you! I already installed the fonts. No crashes since then. I hope that was the solution :)

It crashed again today :(

again on freetype (although installed) and a font (i tried to install it). I have been using thunderbird for decades and this never happened before.

Did you try the fix in the codeweavers link?

I tried the following command: apt-get install libfreetype6:amd64 but freetype is already installed.

The crashes still happen, but not so often any more.

apt-get install libfreetype6:amd64

Latest crash reports still direct into the same direction. I just install the fonts mentioned in the crash reports, but new missing fonts appear. I don't know what's that about at all.

Maybe there's a conflict with the DE language pack that's installed. Disable it and see if it helps. Note that language packs only affect the language of the interface elements - they don't perform spell checking, as do the separate dictionary add-ons.

Perhaps the FreeType for your version of Linux is causing the crash.

Your page says is has been fixed in freetype 2.6 and I run freetype 2.10.

Problem persists. https://crash-stats.mozilla.org/report/index/c303d425-b0e0-4fd9-ab11-b40e40221203 I deactivated German language, but still crashes from time to time. I also got crashes in Google Chrome with errors I couldn't find anywhere. Maybe I have some kind of RAM issue?

bobhund are you still crashing?

I don't see any crash reports in the last three months. https://crash-stats.mozilla.org/signature/?product=Thunderbird&signature=memmove%20%7C%20T1_Get_Private_Dict&date=%3E%3D2023-01-09T00%3A12%3A00.000Z&date=%3C2023-04-09T00%3A12%3A00.000Z
