Firefox Closes Randomly - Any Solutions?

As others have reported, Firefox will suddenly close. There are no warnings and it doesn't freeze it just turns off.

As a WordPress web developer, I have lost hours of work due to this issue. When the browser closes, my work is lost.

I have installed the latest & greatest video driver (and the driver of everything else.) I have minimal add-ons.

I have seen several other threads and no posted solution. Should I start using another browser?

Hi Lisa, that's not normal. (Also, Save Draft is your friend.)

When you start Firefox, does it act as though it crashed or does it behave as though you shut down Firefox normally?

Do you have Restore Previous Session turned on (on the Options/Settings page, first panel)?

Would you be willing to install one of my add-ons for testing? You can use its toolbar button to add a tab to the current window and turn on a script that displays that annoying message about leaving the page if something tries to close the window. This can help defend against a window closing accidentally (if that is what is happening). However, it wouldn't work against a crash.

Is there anything logged in the Windows Event log ?

Could there be memory issues where the OS or Firefox runs out of memory ?

Do you let Windows handle the Page file automatically or have you set a fixed size for the Windows Page File ?

  • Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Performance -> Settings

If you use a fixed size for the page file then try the automatic setting and let Windows handle the page file automatically.

Firefox restarts and restores the tabs as if nothing had gone wrong. There's no error messages and all the tabs are restored.

The add-on does sound like a viable work-around, assuming it isn't crashing.

Thanks everyone, the page file was set to manual (5Gb) but is now set to automatic. We will see what that does.

The system resources were showing with less than 75% memory being used. While lower is preferred, this seems like an adequate usage (I was running Photoshop and Dreamweaver as well.)

This problem has been going on for a while - through several iterations of Firefox. I am using version 89.06, 64-bit. The computer resources should be more than sufficient as an i7 dualcore 3.6 GHz each. 16Gb RAM, so more wouldn't hurt. I was using an Nvidia Quadro card, but it seems to have quit working so I've switched to the internal video card (Intel's HD Graphics 4600) which runs Photoshop without complaint. I was having more significant problems using the Nvidia card (on occasion, everything would crash when using Photoshop)

In case it matters, I'm using the Dark Brushed Metal BLACK by PINBOC - I didn't like the new theme.

I see you started a separate thread with much more info about the problem (you are getting a message rather than Firefox closing itself). Probably best to continue in your new thread(s):

Hi all,

I took a look at the error logs as suggested by cor-el, and I have a couple faults of low Virtual Memory. As you can see, firefox is on the list of high users of Virtual Memory. Maybe Firefox gets shutdown to free up memory because its deemed the least important one? Photoshop doesn't get shutdown. In any case, the low virtual memory is probably the root cause. Thanks to everyone who helped me find the right rabbit hole!

FYI, Here's the error message: Windows successfully diagnosed a low virtual memory condition. The following programs consumed the most virtual memory: Photoshop.exe (39644) consumed 3434917888 bytes, MoUsoCoreWorker.exe (22456) consumed 2144460800 bytes, and firefox.exe (37808) consumed 1487577088 bytes.
