Lots of trouble backpaging in Firefox

more options

Firefox has been my browser of choice for many years, and over all those years I've had one nagging persistent problem with it that there seems no possible fix for and it will not go away no matter what measures I try. Backpaging takes several attempts to work when it should just work the first time. I've had to try up to 7 times to get back to the previous page, both with the button and my mouse. I know this has been a problem for years for others too, because I searched on it, and Mozilla seems incapable of doing anything about it, or perhaps they are just unwilling to bother with it. Which is it? Do they just not care, or is this beyond their ability to resolve?

Right-click on one of the arrows in front of the address bar.

I get around this by; When I find a link I want to check out, I open it in a new tab/window. Then when I am done, I close it and am back where I started.

I'm not interested in a workaround, I want it to work the way it's supposed to.

I don't know what you mean by "both with the button and my mouse". Try the keyboard; alt+← goes back, alt+→ goes forward.

Some sites add more entries to the tab history in Firefox than in other browsers, I don't know why. Are there particular sites where you see this behavior consistently? You could file a web compatibility report:

https://webcompat.com/

And meanwhile, it sounds like you know about right-clicking the Back button to show the recent tab history so you can jump back several "pages" if the first click didn't work.
