Hello,

I am running into something very frustrating and am incredibly annoyed by it. Yesterday, I was browsing and had bookmarked some sites prior to me doing a Firefox update. After the update I had restarted my computer. Fast forward to today and I come to find out that NOTHING from the SEVEN (yes SEVEN!) hours leading up to the update had saved at all in Firefox. No history and no bookmarks from that time period. Oddly enough, my last bookmark shows eight whole days ago so not sure as to the extent of the damage. I have attached some pics showing the huge gap of missing data. It absolutely perplexes me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I actually misread. From the looks of it, i'm actually missing NINETEEN (19!) hours of activity, completely gone. This is absolutely ridiculous.

Sorry to hear about this problem. It is difficult to understand how the latest 19 hours could get deleted from both history and bookmarks.

Could you check whether your more recent activity was in a different profile, as follows:

Profile Manager Page

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

This page should list at least one profile and could list many. (Each profile has two folders and one or more buttons. Do not use any Remove buttons!)

The profile that Firefox is currently using will have this:

This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted.

Do you have another profile listed on this page? If so, you can check whether it is the one you were using recently by clicking its Launch profile in new browser button.

If it isn't what you want, simply close that new window.

If it IS what you want, back on the about:profiles page, click the Set as default profile button for that profile so Firefox uses it automatically at the next startup.

Anything there?

Appreciate the quick response.

I have two profiles listed in that section. The default one currently in use and a second one. I launch the second profile in a new browser and it seems to be a completely clean profile. Everything default as if it was a fresh install of Firefox, so no dice there. Any other possible solutions?

The only other place you might find an intact Firefox profile folder would be on your desktop, in an "Old Firefox Data" folder, if Firefox performed a Refresh (or "tune up") around the time of the update.

What's really hard to understand is that Firefox doesn't have a feature that erases 19 hours of history or any hours of bookmarks.

Do you use Firefox Sync? I wonder whether there was some terrible Sync glitch.

I can confirm that there is no "Old Firefox Data" folder on my desktop unfortunately. And I do use Firefox Sync. I guess it's possible that a crazy sync glitch could have occurred but that doesn't undo the damage done. Especially when mitigating measures such as profiles and restores are in place which are meant to minimize these kinds of events. It's insane since I can't even fathom the odds of something like this happening to me. I've used Firefox flawlessly up till now but this is an absolutely serious glitch if that is the case.

If you check in your current profile folder, do you have a file named places.sqlite-corrupt from around the time of the update?

If Firefox wasn't able to use the file after restarting, it might have rebuilt bookmarks from the last automatic backup and history from Sync. But that's wild speculation.

To explore files in the profile folder, see: Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.

There is an article about how to possibly rescue a -corrupt file but I have never tried it myself: https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Mozilla/Tech/Places/places.sqlite_Database_Troubleshooting

Also, if your bookmarks are more than a week behind, you might look in the bookmarkbackups folder to see what files are in there (the creation dates are coded into the names). I have a converter to view the contents as an HTML export file if you want that for reference (in case you don't want to restore the old backup completely, since that wipes what you have right now).

I looked in the profile root folder and no file exists with the corrupt name.

Would looking at the contents in HTML be any different than me doing a complete backup restore? Because I did the restore and my bookmarks are still not there.

As much as I appreciate your help, this is looking more and more like a lost cause. Unless some other suggestion comes up, I will chalk this up as a loss.
