Windows 10 crash - Firefox can't load websites - other browsers can - Requires Windows restart TWICE

Hi,

I am using Windows 10 Edition Windows 10 Home Version 20H2 Installed on ‎24-‎08-‎2020 OS build 19042.804 Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.551.0

Firefox 85.0.2 (64-bit) is my main browser

This issue has been bothering me for a very long time and hence I have turned here for help.

Whenever my Windows shuts down abruptly (due to power failure,etc) upon restart everything else works fine EXCEPT Firefox

Internet works well on ALL other browsers EXCEPT Firefox.

My current workaround is to restart Windows TWICE and ONLY Then Firefox works normally.

I have checked: 1. Firefox can't load websites but other browsers can From <https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-cant-load-websites-other-browsers-can> but this does not seem relevant as no changes have been made to any setting

2. Firefox may have shut down abnormally, leaving the lock file in place. To fix this, open the profile folder (see Finding your profile without opening Firefox) and delete the parent.lock file. From <https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-already-running-not-responding#w_remove-the-profile-lock-file> I have tried to delete the parent.lock file and restart Firefox but there is no benefit. Websites do not open

The ONLY step which seems to work is to RESTART Windows TWICE.

Can anyone please guide me on how to fix this APART from restarting Windows TWICE?

Thanks a lot!

Does this happen a lot?

Go to your local department/electronics store and look around for a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) that is useful for you. The lowest price is $50 +. There are also units on the market that plug into the computer. So if the battery gets low, it will shut down the computer to protect it.

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Note: Firefox comes in three or more folders on all computers. They are;

Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And two folders in the profile of each user on the computer for each Firefox profile for that user.

If you remove the Firefox folder, the user profiles would not be affected.

Beta, Developer, Nightly versions https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/desktop/

Install Older Version Of Firefox {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Look for, and remove any Mozilla or Firefox program folders. Do not remove the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

Do Not remove any profile folders.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

@fredmcd, thanks for trying to help but unfortunately BOTH your answers are not really help solve this specific question asked by me. 1. Getting a UPS does not really help with the question asked here with respect to Firefox. UPS may help my laptop to some extent. 2. Why would I want to do a full clean re-install?? Does that GUARANTEE that this issue will be fixed in the next abrupt shut down? I am perplexed by many contributors in almost ALL forums to do a COMPLETE reinstall! Just prolongs downtime trying to rebuild everything.

Thanks any ways in spending some time in posting these answers.

Hi there KoolPal,

I had the same issue as u and was wondering what happened. I could resolve it by installing the latest Visual Studio (2015, 2017 and 2019) from Microsoft (both x86 and x64). Here's the link, maybe it would help you  !

Good luck !

Computers don't like sudden loss of power. This can end up corrupting or even destroying the hard drive. A UPS is a good thing.

If there is a corrupt file, a clean reinstall would remove it.

Does Firefox open at all (i.e. do you get the window with the Firefox user interface) or does this fail as well ?

Hi,

Firefox launches perfectly without any errors. It's just that websites do not open. The SAME websites open with OTHER browsers.

When I RESTART Windows TWICE THEN Firefox works as normal with ALL websites opening.

Hope this helps you find a solution.

Hi there!

I checked and found that I ALREADY have Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable (x64) - 14.26.28720 installed on my machine for a long time now.

Looks like this is not helping in my case.

Thanks for the tip.
