This is weird :

Now I see the "Did this reply solve your problem?" and the "Solved the problem" button next to it (both of which could be more to the left) under the reply box, but I see no "Helpful" button(s) like I do in other threads ....... (?)

In other threads I see the "Helpful" buttons, but no "Solved the problem" button. Only OPs and moderators see the "Solved the problem" buttons;   contributors should see them too.   Otherwise they'll keep telling OP's to click on the button to the right of the post.

Additional info which I'm sure you are aware of....if you had posted a comment which solved my problem, then I could not select it as a 'Chosen Solution' or 'Solve the problem' because they are not visible to me because I did not create the question. So, if the person who posted the question did not know what to do, then I could not advise them on what to click because as someone who merely helps on the forum, it is invisible.

Yes, I know, as you can see in my last post.

But now, since you posted in my thread, in see the "Helpful" buttons, which means that they only appear for the OP after someone else has posted an answer.

By the way : that "thumbs down" button has to go !

When someone thinks a post was helpful, they'll click on the "Helpful" button, and if it wasn't helpful, they don't have to let the well-meaning poster know that their post wasn't helpful by rubbing it in ....

Toad-Hall : thanks for posting  !!!

BTW : I just gave you a "Helpful" vote; had that been a mistake, I could not rectify it, cause there is no option to do so.

I see two "Helpful" buttons (one of which has to go: the thumbs down) under the reply box, and to the left there is a huge space that could be used for the "Solved the problem" button.

Everybody should see all buttons : OPs, contributors and moderators, to avoid confusion.

Well, I think I've done enough testing.

Conclusion : The "Solved the problem" button is indeed   under   the reply box,   but it is also under the   "Helpful"  button(s).
Not every OP may scroll down and notice it.
There is plenty of room for it on the left side of the   "Helpful"  button.

I agree with you.

I don't see how to quote a message. Am I missing soething?

@ the-edmeister:

Quoting you :

"I don't see how to quote a message. Am I missing something? "

You may just have found another bug :

When you click on the three vertical dots (upper right corner of the post you want to quote) you get the option to either edit or quote.

So I tried to quote your post like we used to do, but with this new layout/format it doesn't work.
Try it and see what happens.

In three years time this is the fourth (!) time they changed the support forums layout and format.
And I wonder : who wanted/needed it and asked them to do it ?

You never see the Helpful section and its buttons on your own replies, the full helpful line is removed in this case, I assume to prevent giving your own replies a helpful vote and because of that, you can never see whether your reply has helpful or unhelpful votes (you would have to open the thread in a PB mode window).

Quote works for me, but using it doesn't look very good. If quote isn't working then make sure you do not block JavaScript.

If I quote a reply then I get HTML code (<p>{user} {said}) with a lot of (HTML) white-space in the 'said' part that should have been removed and only the user name should be copied and not the karma-titles (.author-name includes the .karma-titles section).

The Inspector shows this code for the Quote action, so the user section could use some white-space cleanup.

function() {
  var contentId = $(this).data("content-id"),
    $content = $("#" + contentId),
    text = $content.find(".content-raw").text(),
    user = $content.find(".author-name").text(),
    reply = template("''<p>{user} [[#{contentId}|{said}]]</p>''\n<blockquote>\n{text}\n</blockquote>\n\n"),
    reply_text, $textarea = $("#id_content"),
    oldtext = $textarea.val();
  reply_text = reply({
    user: user,
    contentId: contentId,
    text: text,
    said: gettext("said")
  });
  $textarea.val(oldtext + reply_text);
  setTimeout(function() {
    $textarea.focus()
  }, 10);
  return true
}

@ cor-el:

Thanks for your reply.

I realized later that of course you don't see the "Helpful" buttons under your own replies; that's when I let my "alter ego" post ......

Quote doesn't work for either "the-edmeister" nor me; in the sense that it doesn't look the way it should (JavaScript is enabled); my guess is that this is because the posters details are above the post instead of at the left side, where they used to be.

I filed a bug report and will wait patiently for things to change.

When you look at the list of questions that need attention or any assortment, has anyone noticed the green tick (tooltip 'Solved') icon on the left side of each question and the vague + sign (tooltip 'Contributed' ). It would appear that every question, new , old , solved, commented, uncommented etc etc has both icons, so rendering them meaningless.

Has anyone else noticed that when you end a sentence and click on the 'return/enter' key, the cursor goes to the next line, but when you 'Preview Reply' or directly 'Post reply' as I do, the sentences have been contiguated; one after the other as if the 'Enter/Return' key is ignored. You have to click twice which is nonsense when you want them on separate lines or you must use the bulletted list.

This is a real pain if you are composing instructions and then Firefox decides to display thew whole lot as one paragraph. Posted as a bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1630287

You can possibly fix the issue with solved and contributed via userContent.css (not via userChrome.css that is meant for the user interface). I previously used code like this to add a background.

@-moz-document domain(support.mozilla.org){
 #questions-list .thread-solved.highlighted      {background-color:#afa !important}
 #questions-list .thread-contributed.highlighted {background-color:#dd0 !important}
}

@ cor-el :

It's very sweet of you to provide the code to add to a userChrome.css file, and I'm sure that those who have such file (or are willing to create one) will be very happy to use it.

Personally I won't be using it, not only because the code may have to be changed with every update, but most of all because I feel that users shouldn't have to jump through hoops to have their browser work the way it used to.

But : thank you !

re : userChrome.css - Very useful info, but it's not really a simple fix such as background colour issue. The code being used in Firefox has been incorrectly written, hence why all questions are apparently solved. It would seem there was very little checking prior to this update release as there are quite a few issues as listed below.

  • This composing window has problems.
  • Quote is a problem.
  • The two icons - tick and + are incorrect.
  • when you receive an email the 'Post a Reply' is smaller font and does not look like a button aka it has no background which matches the one used in this forum. I missed it the first time wondering how on earth I was supposed to use the email to get back to the question. See image below for comparison.
  • And the userChrome.css code cor-el correctly wrote in this forum, does not get correctly posted in the received emails. I've previously mentioned this in a bug, but obviously it still is not fixed. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1608715

Testing to see if quote works now   -   and it does   (had to do a few things I never had to do before,   but at least we can quote)

The screenshot shows what it looks like   -  note the <p> </p> tags  (also mentioned by cor-el)

This is not about code in userChrome.css (that is for the user interface), but code for userContent.css that is code for styling a web page and this CSS code would only need an update when the forum changes its layout (CSS selector). The last change before this happened years ago and it is not likely that this will change anytime soon.
