I often use the trick of right clicking on a link and then open in new tab to keep the original web page open but now nothing happens when I do it. I wonder if there has been a Firefox update today which has caused this.

It started this morning and I'd be most grateful for some assistance with this as it's particularly useful with Facebook.

Which operating system are you on? Does right click work on other apps, like the file browser of you system?

Hi Patrick, thank you so much for your response.

I am using iMac OS Mojave operating system, Firefox 7.0.

I just tested to see if the right click system worked in Chrome and it did. So it seems it's a Firefox related problem.

I have closed down quite a few tabs in case it was related to Firefox having too many tabs open, and I closed and restarted Firefox. It is now behaving itself and opening tabs correctly.

Hey gillie2tat!

An alternative to right-clicking and then selecting open link in new tab is to click on the link with your middle mouse button (often the scroll wheel). Does that work for you?

I had the same issue of my long practice of right clicking a link and then choosing "open in a new tab" to get the new link open in a new FF tab, but not going immediately to the new tab. I went to the new tab when I wanted by clicking its icon in the corner of the FF screen. I tried using my scroll wheel to click the link, and it did open in a new tab -- but a tab that immediately flashed on top of my current web page.

I prefer the right click and see-it-when-ready old routine, but I can adapt my habits.

Strange thing is when I right click I get the same pop up box, but only with a choice to cast to a device. The box has lots of room for other choices, so why not have the "open in new tab" choice there as always.

Just saying.....

Hi j_kushman, I'm puzzled that you get a menu related to casting when you right-click a link. ??

I just had an auto update Firefox overnight. In the new version if I right click on a link or an item I get the usual pop up box, but the content is changed radically. The one item listed is "Search Google for ....." Google is my default search engine. The previous menu items like "Save image as," and many others are not visible, just blank (faint) lines. By experimenting, I find that the actions previously visible are apparently still in the pop up box, but their names no longer appear. If you know how many lines down your wanted function is and you click on that line, you get the expected function. For instance, I can get "Open in a new tab" by clicking the first line, but I have to know that is where that function resides.

Hi j_kushman, your installation might be damaged. Could you please start a new thread as suggested earlier? Next steps vary based on, for example, your OS (Windows, Mac, Linux), as we shouldn't clog up the original poster's mailbox with all that.

I'm working through the issues. Honestly, I think I have a corrupt Firefox update (I'll update again) or the update has created some unforseen consequences most users won't care about.

I might start a new thread, but probably not.

Redid the update of Firefox. All seems good.

  1. I don't see any way to select an answer. There is no list of answers from which to choose.

Looking at the history of users concerned with Firefox and right clicking and the content of the posts, I think the situations may differ too much to make my solution "the" solution. Better let people read the few posts that are here for themselves.
