Hello community, this morning I downloaded a Firefox update only to find that my green security padlock was no longer in my browser! I have used FFox for many years and never had this happen before therefore am naturally concerned that my web security has been compromised. As an older peerson I am not a tech. genious and have tried re-installing Firefox, also looked at updating but it reads that updates are up to date. Can anyone help put this right please? Many thanks Rose

Hello Rose,

In addition to the above :

In the Firefox version 70 release notes it says :

"The formerly green lock icon is now grey" (looks black to me though ... ) :

Hi rosesidney, There's already talk among the Contributors here which might eventually lead to a Bug Report being generated. In the mean time, if you should happen to visit a site which is not Secure you will see a red hash through the padlock.

My pleasure, Rose - and yes : Firefox is doing everything they can to keep you safe.

I'm glad the padlock looks black to you too; I thought that it was just me .....

Many thanks for your info. It did seem strange that the green padlock was replaced by a black version. I have clicked the black one which assures me it's secure but verified by Amazon - not sure what that means exactly - surely if secure it should be Firefox saying so? Not being a tech. person just an ordinary user was the reason for my query in the first place! Thanks again greatly appreciate your help. Rose

All of us are just ordinary users.

There are different services used to verify websites for security. Amazon provides one of them.

I'm glad that we could help.

I can confirm this isn't a bug, it's just a new design.

I don't think that is a "daft" question, in fact I think that change was unnecessary and needlessly confuses users. For some time the 'color' of the 'lock' was stressed a being an important feature, and now "someone" changed that without prior warning.

Overall, I thought that when it was changed to a "green lock" years ago - - that was an unnecessary change and it thru me off for awhile until I got used to it being green.

A lot of images have been changed to gray scale SVG images (look at the bookmarks) and in Firefox 70 this happened to the identity icon as well.

the-edmmeister, thank you for making me smile! It goes to show that even the experts get disgruntled when things change without notice. No hope then for the ordinary folk left worrying and wondering about their internet security!! Rose
