Probably the simplest way is to install ImportExportTools NG and then Tools/IET NG/Export all mail files. This copies the Mail and ImapMail directories of the profile folder to an external location. The add-on also has a scheduled backup option for either the entire profile or just the mail.
thanks for your advice - have downloaded it and will try it.

I inquired yesterday about how to export or back up mail folders - the import/export tool was suggested. Tried using it to back up with no results - then tried to export the profile file - in doing that it totally wiped out all the files on Thunderbird - I was left with the box to fill in info for a new account - have tried importing the file that showed after exporting but get nothing usable?!? Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Bill
Perhaps you could continue the discussion by explaining exactly what you did.
Personally I find it impossible to use a menu driven export process to do what you say has occurred so your steps will be much appreciated.

Hi Matt -
Thanks for your quick response and sorry for my delay in answering - I am not a nite owl!!!
As best I remember - using import/export tool add on:
I set it to back up daily - waited 18 hours and still nothing happened tried exporting to an external drive the 'Profile' and after I did this all my files were gone - looked like a just downloaded version of Thunderbird tried importing the file from the external drive and got alot of weird files - about 15 did a couple of other things I can't remember - one time got more weird files - another got nothing need email as I find it really difficult doing it on phone so set up accounts again to at least go forward from here But really need old stuff as it is my filing system with lots of info etc Some in my following chains thru 'c:\\users\owner...' I found what looks like the right list of files - stupidly did not copy the address - so trying to find them again -but then not sure what to do, based on my previous experiences!?!?!
Hope this helps - wanted to respond, so will get this off and start looking again! GREATLY appreciate your help!
Cheers, Bill
Hi Matt - this address looks like maybe the right one - the date - yesterday is when I was doing it.
Cheers - Bill

Have a look for it in the about:profiles and see if it is registered.
See https://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com/2019/09/i-lost-my-profilemail-on-update-to.html
I wrote that for folks updating to V68 and getting caught in a dedicated profile per install feature that has some questionable parts. However it illustrates the About:profile and how to get there reasonably well I think
