Is it possible to turn FPN off in new window while keep it running in other windows

I noticed that the FPN extension doesn't work independently from other open browser windows. When I change it from on to off it turns it off on all open windows and vise versa. Is this something that will change in the future so I can run a windows with it on and another with the FPN off?

Hi Stefankubli,

This is part of the functionality of Firefox itself, and is not limited to FPN. The status of add-ons is shared across the browser as a whole for all add-ons, so if you activate one add-on in a window, it will be reflected in all other windows as well.

However, you can create and use a second profile as a workaround.

  • Type about:profiles into your address bar.
  • Click on Create a New Profile in the top left of the page.
  • Hit Next > Enter in a name for your profile > Finish

Now you can find the profile you just created in about:profiles and click on Launch profile in a new browser. You will have to install your add-ons on this new profile as well, but their status will not be shared with the other profile.

Well that is not true. For example, I can activate uBlock Origin in one window and have it deactivated in another. Just to be clear, this is in a different windows and note for another tab in the same windows. This works with any add-on except for the FPN one.

Hmm, that's strange.

When uBlock Origin is disabled, it only will be disabled on the specific page you are currently on, so this will only be reflected in the 2nd window if you are on the same exact page. Open this question thread in two separate windows and ensure it is the same URL in both windows.

Now disable uBlock Origin on this page specifically and pull it up in the 2nd window and it should also be disabled, but only on this page. What other add-ons are you testing this with?

Your right, I didn't refresh the old window. Because the FPN add-on has an indicator that turns on or off on all windows simultaneous while the other add-ons need a refresh to show its current status. I'll try creating a new profile to have a more secure session available. Thanks again!

No worries! I'm glad the workaround helps!
