Flash support after 2020

Veröffentlicht

Hi

I have to access one web page to use the web interface that allows control of my music server and depends on Flash.

I am not concerned with security, just to continue with the functionality.

I planned to download an old version of a browser such as Mozilla, thinking that saving this and turning off updates would allow me to continue to use the interface. However, my concern is that my laptop is from 2011 and if I save and re-launch after 2020 on another device that it will automatically update on all major browsers (most use Chromium).

Can you think of any solution please to help me-I could for example download an old version of Firefox or another browser for this task as it is not being updated anymore?

Best regards

Stephen

Hi Stephen, There are older versions of Firefox available. Actually, all of them, I think.

You can get the latest Extended Support Release, which still supports Flash and has the "Always Allow" setting here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/

That should see you through for awhile.

Eventually, the web page and web interface that you use will probably change to a different format, like html5. You'll have to prepare for that as well in the near future.

Keep your security software up to date and -

You can consider to switch to Firefox 68 ESR. *https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/forum-response-flash-end-life Forum Response *https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Plugins/Roadmap ---- Firefox 68.1.0 ESR: *https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ *https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/68.1.0/releasenotes/ See also: *https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/68.0/releasenotes/

Hi

Thanks for your replies so far.

According to the first link on the Firefox roadmap, all Flash support for ESR will stop from the end of 2020.

This appears to mean that even with updates off on version 68 ESR say, that this will not work beyond end-2020.

The webpage developer for my music server is not prepared to take any action to convert to HTML5.

Therefore, if the above is correct, is there another browser, or workaround that anybody can suggest please, that will work for much longer, if I save the browser.

I am not a developer, so assume that converting the web interface page that I need to HTML cannot be done by a consumer easily?

Best regards

Stephen

You can use Firefox 68 ESR and update until it reaches its last release (68.9.x) and then possibly disable updating to the next ESR release (that would be 76 ESR). Best is to use only this Firefox if you need to access this website and use the latest release for visiting other websites.

Hi core-el especially

The idea is indeed to keep a dedicated browser version only for this webpage.

However, if I save Firefox 68 ESR as you suggest, and save onto a flash drive to launch on another device than my main laptop after 2020, even with updates off, is this setting saved on re-launch on another device please?

Otherwise doesn't the roadmap mean that the updates off settings will be overridden by Firefox stating that ESR Flash support will be disabled at the future date on the roadmap?

Best wishes

Stephen

If you want to place Firefox 68 ESR on a flash drive then it is better to use the portable Firefox 68 ESR version because this version will store its profile folder on the same USB stick. The regular version will create/use its own profile on the Windows system drive.

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Note that currently:

Mozilla Firefox ESR, Portable Edition is Version 60.9.0 and according to the App Notes: Release Schedule Change: We have deviated from our standard ESR release schedule linked above due to Bug 604596. Once fixed, ESR will moved to 68.x.
