Use something other than Ctrl+I for Bookmarks?

more options

Hey guys,

Now that Firefox has had its speed makeover (nice!), I've switched back to it from Chrome. However, when I post forum messages and try to apply italics by pressing Ctrl+I (which, as you probably know, has been a standard shortcut since the '90s), the bookmark list opens. I'm guessing the person who made that decision was strictly a coder who never used styled text.  :?) Is there a way to change it to something else? Thanks!

It depends on what website you are using. Typically, it's the website's responsibility to override any browser or operating system keyboard shortcuts if they want to define their own keyboard shortcut. So, on properly designed websites, this keyboard shortcut should never be a problem.

For example, this website does not override the Ctrl + I keyboard shortcut because that shortcut does nothing here. Therefore, the bookmarks sidebar will appear. However, if you go to something like Outlook or Gmail email and press Ctrl + I, they override the keyboard shortcut so that the sidebar will not appear and the feature they have added is run instead.

It's worth noting that it's the same case for the Ctrl + B keyboard shortcut that's commonly used for bold text. But the same rule applies for that.

You are welcome to leave feedback for the Firefox developers, but I'd say it's unlikely it will be changed since it's been a shortcut for a long time. You can go to the Firefox Help menu and select Submit Feedback... or use this link. Your feedback gets collected by a team of people who read it and gather data about the most common issues.

This is not the case. CTRL+i and CTRL+b opens the bookmark toolbar also on sites which support formatting the text.

Like I said above, not every website properly overrides the keyboard shortcut. That's not a Firefox-related problem, that's an issue with the website's design.

Hi Azur, is there a particular website where you want to use Ctrl+i for Italic or Ctrl+b for bold and it stopped working around the time of Firefox 65? There is a preference you can use to set Firefox to generate different events for sites that look to the old Firefox behavior. cor-el mentioned it in the other thread where you posted, but I'll detail it here, too:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste hack and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the dom.keyboardevent.keypress.hack.dispatch_non_printable_keys.addl preference to display a dialog where you can list sites that should have the old behavior and enter the host name, then click OK

So for example, if the site address was https://webapp.example.com/ you would enter just the hostname portion

webapp.example.com

If you need to list more than one host name, separate them with commas but no spaces.

If you try it, does it make any difference?
