prints only 1st page

I thought this bug was solved decades ago. This is very bad because my documentation is missing pages and I can't go back in time.

Issue with firefox only. IE, Edge, Chrome, all works fine.

How can I get firefox to print all pages?

Just did some tests with your extension, so far so good.

It's still a shame mozilla will not respond to this issue.

Hi kaveh.nasr, Firefox has problems paginating large blocks of content styled with certain rules. They look fine on screen, but when printed, Firefox won't break them across page boundaries so you only get one page of them.

Is there a particular site where you notice this problem? We could take a look and see whether it is one of these known Firefox issues.

Alternately, you could try an extension I created which modifies style rules in pages to make them print better. This usually makes things better, but sometimes moves sidebars around in odd ways.

I'm always looking for more weird situations that need to be fixed, so if you try it and run into sites that won't print in full even after you inject changes, please let me know.

hi Jscher

Simply put, every website that I use. I'm an accountant, so I'll print confirmation pages, copies of sales tax remittances, income tax filing, technical research over multiple pages.

I can reproduce the problem with any website you throw at me.

This is a firefox issue. How do I know? Because every other web browser doesn't have this problem.

This used to be an issue about a decade ago.

It's annoying. I use three workarounds:

(1) Use Chrome for printing.

(2) Use printwhatyoulike.com (which lets you add a "Bookmarketlet" to Firefox -- and other browsers -- for instant page modifications without going to the website). I find that after using PWYL properly (takes a little experimentation sometimes), all pages print instead of just the first.

(3) Use the add-on Print/Print Preview 1.3. While its main purpose is to (very usefully) add print and print preview options to the context menu, within the print preview it adds a "Simplify Page" option that makes more than just the first page print in many (not all) cases. This can also prove very useful in clearing intrusive text overlays on top of the text you *want* (even in Chrome).

In fact, with this forum page, printing it in Chrome, or ticking "Print/Print Preview 1.3" "Simplify Page" box both worked and allowed all pages to print. I couldn't get printwhatyoulike to do the trick on this particular page, but I didn't try too long.

Between those three approaches, printing has become much less of a hassle for me in Firefox, especially the "prints only the first page" issue. I'll have to try out jscher2000's extension, too. Sounds very promising.

Hi Rick, The addon Print/Print Preview 1.3 doesn't work for me. It doesn't do anything special other than add a context menu button. Jscher's works for now.

This is crazy, am I going to have to migrate back to chrome? Where can we submit bugs? Do they even know there's a problem? Do they care?

The developers are aware of several different bugs related to printing. For example, if a large block of content is marked with display: flex then it won't paginate. You don't need to file that one again.

If you give specific examples, I or someone else can try to figure out whether the problems are new bugs that haven't been filed.

Either way, it usually takes a long time to get print bugs fixed, so you might need to use a different browser if this problem comes up frequently.

That's odd. When I do a Print Preview of this page with Print/Print Preview 1.3 installed, it gives me the "Simplify Page" option to tick near the upper right, as shown in the attached screenshot. I wonder why it's not doing that for you?

more options

Hi Rick216, the "Simplify This Page" feature is linked to Reader View. It isn't always available because many web pages don't have a recognized layout for Reader View to simplify.

This solution worked for me! Try the extention. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/printable-the-print-doctor/

I just changed to FireFox from Chrome but have found multiple sites when I do the print preview, pages are missing from the print view and the pages are not printing. The pages do print correctly with Chrome. I'm having to still use Chrome to print.

Yes, some style rules in the page cause Firefox to do a poor job of inserting page breaks (it doesn't). That's why I created the add-on.

I just tried printing this with jscher2000's Print Doctor add-on (link above). After I clicked on "Allow Page Breaks" and "Prevent Repeated Elements," it printed fine and fully.

I tried the extension and it seems to work. However I don't like work arounds for this. It leaves too much room for error and my employees cannot go back in time to find that printed page.

Firefox should fix this natively.

Thanks again for your help

Just my 2 cents...

I totally agree that Firefox should finally fix this frustrating issue. However,

(1) While other browsers usually print all pages on sites where Firefox fails to, they are also prone to many other print-output issues that Print Doctor and other add-ons can often address, such as repeated elements blocking many parts of the printout text. (I also use PrintWhatYou like often, even on Chrome (there's a learning curve involved).

(2) Firefox does print all pages on many sites (though again it fails to on many).

(3) The inconvenience of using an add-on for this issue is outweighed by benefits that Firefox has over other browsers "on average" (not "all the time" -- I certainly find myself briefly heading over to Chrome or IE once or twice a day...and yes, that's often for printing).

This is a new problem for me. I was able to print multi-page documents/screens with no issues. In the last week or so it only prints the first page. Here is a link to try.

https://icare.fairfaxcounty.gov/ffxcare/Datalets/Datalet.aspx?sIndex=0&idx=1

Go the column on the far right and select Printable Summary. In this case it should be several pages.

At first I thought it was isolated to one site. Today it happened on two that I use regularly.

Hi adbrown, that link doesn't work outside of your session. However, starting at the home page I could reproduce the problem by searching for 100 SPRING and clicking the first match:

https://icare.fairfaxcounty.gov/ffxcare/Main/Home.aspx

The layout uses embedded tables, which seems to cause the problem. It's just one of many layouts where Firefox fails to insert page breaks. I'm not aware of a convenient workaround for that. (My add-on happens to work on that page, but only by accident.)
