A small window opened in the upper left corner asking me to update Firefox. I did and it came back a couple more times. I had some issues with pages loading so restarted and now I cannot restore previous session and my bookmarks toolbar is missing. Windows 7 Professional

The Bookmarks Toolbar disappearing can be caused by a problem with using "Restore Previous Session" as the startup setting, so if you restore the session automatically on the next start then try to disable this feature.

  • Options/Preferences -> General -> Startup

Once the Bookmarks Toolbar has reappeared then you can re-enable the "Restore Previous Session" startup setting and check if the Bookmarks Toolbar stays visible on next starts.

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.jsonlz4 file in the Firefox profile folder that stores session data.

  • rename/remove sessionstore.jsonlz4 and delete sessionstore.js

When sessionstore.jsonlz4 is deleted you lose pinned tabs and open tabs and you will have to recreate them, so if necessary make a note or bookmark them.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

If your Firefox suddenly feels very unfamiliar, without your regular settings or data, it could be related to changes in how Firefox 67 handles Firefox profiles.

If you haven't already, could you close out of Firefox and do a normal Windows shutdown and restart to complete any pending updates and release any file locks.

If Firefox again starts up without your data, could you check whether your stuff is available in a different profile, as follows:

Profile Manager Page

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

This page should list at least one profile and could list many. Each will show links to a pair of folders; please ignore those for now.

The profile that Firefox is currently using will have this:

This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted.

Anyway, please do not delete anything here -- don't use any Remove buttons.

Do you have another profile named default or default-longnumber listed on this page? If so, you can check whether it is the one you were using recently by clicking its Launch profile in new browser button.

If it isn't what you want, simply close that new window.

If it IS what you want, back on the about:profiles page, click the Set as default profile button for that profile so Firefox uses it automatically at the next startup.

Any progress so far, or do we need to keep looking for your data in some other places?

Thank you for your suggestions and sorry for the delay. I do not work from my office and have not been home much the last couple of days. I have been re-adding frequently used bookmarks to the toolbar and starting over with the windows and tabs that I had open before this issue...when I can remember what I had open previously. The search bar in the upper toolbar is also missing as are the drop-down bookmarks. When asking for or searching online for answers, I often get stuck on the first suggestion such as "close out of Firefox" (click on the X?) or, as suggested by cor-el, Options/Preferences -> General -> Startup .

Hi ronold, were you able to review the about:profiles page?

I cannot take a screenshot of that page while right-clicking and the three dots are not present in the upper RH corner. It shows... Profile:default Profile:default-release

On the about:profiles page, one of those would be the profile currently in use and you could take a peek at the other one using the method I described in my earlier reply here to see whether it has your missing settings and data: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1260265#answer-1225896

I clicked on default and the old windows/tabs were restored. Thanks for your help!

The drop-down bookmarks and the small search window in the upper right corner are still missing.

Which drop-down? The top menu bar (File, Edit, View) or the button on the toolbar?

Menu Bar

You can use one of these methods to show the toolbar list and select the desired bars there:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank spot on the tab bar (or the "+" button)
  • (menu bar) View > Toolbars
On Windows, tap the Alt key to activate the menu bar temporarily.
  • in Customize mode > Toolbars button (see: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars)

To turn on the Menu Bar or Bookmarks Toolbar, click it on the list.

Bookmarks Menu toolbar button

Either:

(A) Use the Customize panel (Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars) to drag the icon to the desired spot on the toolbar

(B) Use the method from Bookmarks in Firefox - section entitled: How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?

  • Click the "Library" button:
  • Click "Bookmarks"
  • Click "Bookmarking Tools"
  • Click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"

To show the small search bar in addition to the main address bar, see: Add the Search bar to your Firefox toolbar.
