I have read a lot and trying a lot for 2 days now (many hours) to disable auto mute. But nothing works at all.

What i want is to whitelist 8-10 websites for example youtube and twitch. I have put https://www.youtube.com http://www.youtube.com https://www.twitch.com http://www.twitch.com Added http (without the S) after a wihle if that was rthe issue but no also tried using * (wildcard) but get invalid hostname if i put * anywhere.

The auto mute is always on and require a mouse click or CTRL+M to play audio on all youtube/twitch pages even the homepage as in www.youtube.com is muted.

Since that did not work at all i started trying to disable auto mute completely but no luck there either. That works the same as if auto mute is on as in always auto mutes all tabs.

What have i tried? 1, The above tried whitelisting. 2, Tried changing Block websites from automatically playing sound (as in untick the option) 3, Tried changing browser.tabs.showAudioPlayingIcon from true too false (yes restarted firefox and also tried computer restart). 1-3 did not work at all all tabs always auto mute.

4, Tried all possible combinations on the 9 preference in about:config when searching for autop. Did nothing about the auto mute always muting all tabs. BUT did change how auto play behaves and i have it like i want it no autoplay before i open the tab (media.autoplay.enabled.user-gestures-needed and media.block-autoplay-until-in-foreground set to true)

5, Started firefox with addons disabled. 6, Deleted all history/coockies/and so on. 7, Tried a completely new FF profile using firefox.exe -P (naturally i thought about this after the history/cookie wipe :( ) 8, Tried FF on my htpc (that did not have FF installed before so first install on that OS) running win 8,1 (this is win10). 5-8 did not work at all.

The one thing left i could try (that i know of now) is try on a ubuntu WM that is on my unraid NAS but since i´m running a parity check (slow cpu that is 100% all the time from the parity check) on that right now that have days left too finish that WM takes 5-10min to just open FF that needs updating (both FF and ubuntu). So that would probably takle hours and delay the parity check some too so nothing i feel like doing now.

So how the **** do you ACTUALLY disable auto mute OR better ACTUALLY whitelist sites/domains??? And again auto PLAY works as i expect and want auto MUTE ALWAYS mute all tabs regardless if withelist is used or it is supposed to be turned off completely. It is driving me insane to have too unmute every damn tab want unmuted on every damn Firefox startup and every damn tab i open that i want audio from. Yes forgot that all tabs i have unmuted is muted again after a firefox restart.

Also the mute/unmute icon is pretty annoying on 7 of my tabs that i have pinned since it so easy to click the mute/unmute icon instead of switching to the tab :=(

Firefox should display the block auto-play icon at the left end of the location/address bar when a website plays a media file. You can click this icon to unblock specific website if you have set Firefox to block auto-play. You can manage these exceptions in "Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Permissions".

With "whitelist" i off course meant the exceptions in "Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Permissions". As in "whitelisting" site/sites to play sounds!

And as i said whitelist/exceptions does nothing and yes they are set to allow and not block (you can set it too block too).

And i also forgot to say that when for example when on youtube click on auto-play icon at the left end of the location/address bar and the site information for www.youtube.com shows up. And then click on the auto play drop down list under permissions that have two options block/allow and i choose allow the ONLY change that happens is. 1, The drop down list will after that always show allow instead of block (which too me means that the "setting" did take). 2, An entry into the whitelist/exceptions is added for that specific site in the youtube example it has added https://www.youtube.com (again too me it means the "setting" did take).

But after clicking allow in that drop down list the tab/site is still muted if i restart FF the tab/site, if i manually unmute all tabs and restart they are muted again. If i close all tabs restart FF go to google and open a completely never before seen/opened video the tab is muted and yes the auto play drop down list still says allow.

And YES FF is set to auto block sound (box is ticked in)

You have a lot of extensions listed in the System Details list next to your question including a Mute Tab extension. If this builtin feature isn't working as expected then possibly one or more extensions are interfering.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Have you read my first post??? Especially note 5 to 8 grizzly666 said

What have i tried? 5, Started firefox with addons disabled. 6, Deleted all history/coockies/and so on. 7, Tried a completely new FF profile using firefox.exe -P (naturally i thought about this after the history/cookie wipe :( ) 8, Tried FF on my htpc (that did not have FF installed before so first install on that OS) running win 8,1 (this is win10). 5-8 did not work at all.

Hardware acceleration i had not tried tough so tried disable that now also tried different content process limit numbers and also tried disable play DRM content. After that test i tried Use recommended performance settings but nope all tabs always auto muted. So tried the same on my HTPC win8,1 machine that as i said in the first post have the same problem (all tabs always auto muted). And also like i said in the first post that OS have never had FF installed so a completely fresh install with no addons/themes installed at all.

Also quite different hardware as the HTPC have an old intel 2500K cpu with a old AMD gpu vs intel 4790K/nvidia 1080 in this rig.
