Autofilling search bar still not working

Veröffentlicht

Quantum 63.0.3 Win10

I can wait up to a minute for the new tab to accept the autofilled url before it reacts. Same issue as previously mentioned, but hasn't been fixed.

Thank you.

I have three. Default, April, and an old one: July. They should be detectable & discernible by dates, right?

I think we know it isn't April. Did you already try both of the others?

If your most up-to-date profile -- you can judge by the history (Ctrl+Shift+h) -- doesn't have any saved logins any more, some potential places to look are:

(A) Any Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop created by a Refresh

(B) Shadow copies of your profile made during Windows updates -- I don't recommend using system restore for this; there are some third party tools

Now in Quantum FF 65.0. W10.

Think this search issue has been going on for several versions, based on my earlier posts. It's NUTS. I'm waiting a long time for it to load, if it will.

Thank you for looking at this problem again.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite (bookmarks and history) and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page
in case errors are reported close and restart Firefox and retry

See also:

If "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page cannot repair places.sqlite then remove all places.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Cor-el,

I started and ended here: use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page in case errors are reported close and restart Firefox and retry.

I opened one tab (and hit Restore Previous). Worked remarkably well.

I think you solved it. Your instructions are amazingly vague, but I'll only ask for clarification if I run into issues.

THANK YOU.

Now on Quantum v 66.0.2. I recently uninstalled & downloaded Firefox and assume I have a new profile. Is that correct? I am still (and it always returned to) having an issue with Search. I ran Verify Integrity on a fairly regular basis and assume I read the results correctly.

If I created a new profile, that did not solve the problem that I have had for quite a while. If I did not, I am stuck on a solution.

Thank you.

Hi CiaoBella1, if you use Firefox's own uninstaller, it doesn't create delete your old profile (at least not by default). If you want to try it:

New Profile Test

This takes about 3 minutes, plus the time to test your address bar.

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

Click the Create a New Profile button, then click Next. Assign a name like April2019, ignore the option to relocate the profile folder, and click the Finish button.

After creating the profile, scroll down to it and click the Set as default profile button below that profile, then scroll back up and click the Restart normally button. (There are some other buttons, but please ignore them.)

Firefox should exit and then start up using the new profile, which will just look brand new. Please ignore any tabs enticing you to connect to a Sync account or to activate extensions found on your system so we can get a clean test.

Does your address bar work any better in the new profile?

When you are done with the experiment, open the about:profiles page again, click the Set as default profile button for your normal profile, then click the Restart normally button to get back to it.

Some warnings would have helped

Passwords/bookmarks/history/spellcheck wiped out completely so it's hard to know if search is any faster or not.

Old Firefox is dated 5 April. Doesn't have all the new passwords I created from Friday's debacle (lost passwords until I removed conflicting addon).

How do I get my old profile back?

Thank you.

UPDATE: I restored (about:profiles) my earlier default.

Where are all my saved passwords? Ditto history. Ditto bookmarks. Ditto everything else.

Wot happened now?

System Restore work? Got MS updates (for some reason installed without me) and so I have a profile from today.

Thank you.

PS: Not close to 3 minutes.

Hi CiaoBella1, it sound like you had difficulty getting back to your regular profile, but based on your UPDATE you eventually found it on the about:profiles list and were able to make it your default again.

During your test, how did the address bar perform in the new profile? You said

So if you spend a minute to accumulate a little bit of history in the new profile so you can test autofill, was it faster or not? To test that profile again, you don't need to create anything, you can just use the "Set as default profile" for your April2019 profile on the about:profiles page.

The difficulty was in not being prepared for no way to login HERE or my email - where I get notices from you and the other helpful people.

Right now, I am far more concerned about missing hundreds of logins/passwords.

          • It did appear faster.

I got back an earlier profile - which does NOT seem like my default because of ALL of the missing necessities.

What about SysRestore? Or is there a better way?

Thank you.

I switched to Default the one that wasn't July or April. Just one profile, not two.

Every time I switch, it seems to create a new profile - I now have three dated 4/10/19: July, default, and April 2019. The earliest one is now named July.

That's the one I will try next.

(The Old FF folder on desktop is April 5.)

JScher2000 - I started using the Verify Integrity button several times a week. Something isn't right about that solution. I am now using V 67.0 and back to square one - Autofill search bar not filling. Is there a permanent fix or a longer temporary one? (Not using Sync. I think we dealt with the folder issue although when I lost passwords and then restored, I might have defeated your recommended fix.) Thank you. Thank you.
