Having got more and more frustrated with Gmail, I decided to look for an alternative email client, and chose Thunderbird. It all seems to be working fine, but I can't seem to get attachments to open.

I searched for an email (using filter these messages) and found the message I was looking for which had a jpeg attached. However, when I try to open the attachment (462kB), it says:- "This attachment appears to be empty. Please check with the person who sent this. Often company firewalls or antivirus programs will destroy attachments."

If I search for this email in Gmail, the attachment is there as expected. If I forward this email from Thunderbird to a colleague who still uses Gmail, he can see the attachment.

Please can you tell me how to fix this? This is a basic installation and the only thing I have done is to uncheck 'Keep messages in all folders for this account on this computer' as I don't want to store many GB of email locally (these are IMAP accounts)
