When "restoring session" it restored a session from 6 months ago - where is my newest session?

I had an insane amount of very important tabs open - many that I hadn't actively visited in weeks, but they were always restored properly when Firefox was restarted, so I didn't bookmark them. I won't be able to just go through my history and find them all, especially since I won't know which ones I was finished with and which ones I still needed to use, since in my History I will have thousands of pages from the past several months to go through. This is complete bollocks, and has not happened to me in years. I thought Firefox was more reliable than this, hence why I admittedly let my guard down a little and got complacent with my tabs. Is there anything I can do to retrieve that session? I'm not seeing any other restoration options from previous dates, and I've already checked the basic troubleshooting, none of which is valid in my case/since updates.

I should clarify, I assume there is a way to retrieve that session, since such an old session was brought back randomly upon restarting the browser. I don't remember doing any kind of permanent session saves 6+ months ago (if that's even possible), so I hope that my most recent session is also still floating around in the ether somewhere.

I did empty my Recycle Bin like an hour ago though, so I'm really hoping that the session files didn't end up in there somehow. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have an upgrade.js file in the sessionstore-backups folder in the profile folder that you could use to restore a more recent session?

Firefox uses the sessionstore.jsonlz4 file in the profile folder to store session data. The sessionstore.jsonlz4 file is only present when Firefox is closed. The sessionstore.jsonlz4 file is created from recovery.jsonlz4 when you close Firefox and is removed and copied to previous.jsonlz4 when you start Firefox to make is possible to restore the session at any time.

Backup the session files in the sessionstore-backups folder in the Firefox Profile Folder to make sure not to lose possible important session data. Do NOT close Firefox when Firefox is already running.

You will normally find these files in the sessionstore-backups folder:

  • previous.jsonlz4 (cleanBackup: copy of sessionstore.jsonlz4 from previous session that was loaded successfully)
  • recovery.jsonlz4 (latest version of sessionstore.jsonlz4 written during runtime)
  • recovery.baklz4 (previous version of sessionstore.jsonlz4 written during runtime)
  • upgrade.jsonlz4-<build_id> (backup created during an upgrade of Firefox)

You can copy a file from the sessionstore-backups folder to the main profile and rename the file to sessionstore.jsonlz4 to replace the current file (make sure to backup the current sessionstore.jsonlz4).

Firefox 56+ releases compress the files in the sessionstore-backups folder and sessionstore.jsonlz4 with LZ4 (.jsonlz4 instead of .js), so it is no longer easy to inspect them.

You can look at this utility to browse Windows System Restore points to see if you can find a suitable sessionstore file (don't use System Restore are this can cause more damage).

Thank you, but I did not find the sessionstore file in any of the Firefox folders as you described it. In the sessionstore-backups folder, I have: previous previous.jsonlz4 recovery.bak recovery.baklz4 recovery recovery.jsonlz4 upgrade.js-20170608105825 upgrade.js-20170628075643 upgrade.js-20170824053622 upgrade.jsonlz4-20180206200532 upgrade.jsonlz4-20180427210249

There never appeared any "sessionstore.jsonlz4" when I closed firefox, nor did naming another file restore any other previous session - I just got this one back again when I restarted firefox.

Is this maybe a fix that doesn't work anymore after the most recent update? or could there be another reason why my folders don't contain any sessionstore files (but can still somehow restore a session as it did just now)? Thanks again
