New versions of Firefox regularly break things. Whether it's Netflix/Stan/Pronto or other streaming services, add-ons, re-invent the UI, some websites just stop working properly with the newer version or a number of other things.

I have 10 PCs here. We are using 55.0.3 because it was the last version with a UI that we were all familiar with, worked with all the services we use, supported all the add-ons and more. It's very outdated but I want to keep all PCs on a known working environment.

So I'm currently testing 61.0.2 (Not 62.0 because it's a zero release, which always have issues). I've managed to find solutions for most annoyances regarding add ons and using Photon-Australis to get back the curved tabs (The square look is just plain disgusting). I've got the reload icon back in the address bar, and hidden the 3 dots with a 30 second timeout so I will likely never have to be annoyed by it. I've got rid of the wasted spaces on the address bar too.

I use a space theme (Earth from space). It uses a cyan font. On the white tabs it's all but invisible. Using the dark theme fixes that, but I'd like to have the tabs the same color as the background of the address bar as in v55. Reading through the userchrome.css file I just get lost.

The other thing I'd like to preserve are the icons for home, download and bookmarks, Is there a way to preserve the icons that are used in v55 rather than the uglier ones use in v61?

I'm sorry for coming across so negatively, it' just I don't get why developers keep changing UIs that are working. Change for the sake of change, which just adds frustration. Firefox is not the only program. Windows is probably the worst. So please don't be offended.

Instead of Firefox 61.0.2 or other regular releases, for a managed installation you wish to keep stable for a period of time, check out the Extended Support Release of Firefox 60. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/faq/

Theme Text/Background Colors

I don't know why a theme would have cyan text on a white background. That doesn't make any sense to me. Can the author fix it?

Icon Substitutions

Firefox 57 and later use SVG drawings instead of bitmaps. They are highly simplified to improve performance, and reduced visual appeal is an unfortunate side effect. If you want to extract the old images and substitute them using custom style rules in a userChrome.css file, you can. There obviously are a lot of details to it, but it sounds as though you already have a basic framework for it.

If by bookmarks you mean bookmark folders, you could take a look at this (Old Icons Variation ZIP file): https://www.userchrome.org/what-is-userchrome-css.html#colorbookmarkfolder

For more advice on CSS rules, I suggest this subreddit as they tend to keep up on the different repositories: https://www.reddit.com/r/FirefoxCSS/

Gosh, that was a speedy reply... Thanks In v55 the tabs and address bar are a transparent grey color. The fonts are easily readable, so it was one of those things that you don't really notice until something changes, like installing a new version that uses white tabs.

The cyan text is on whatever background color the browser uses for it's tabs. With and without the theme installed the tabs are grey. I don't currently have any customization's for v55 using userchrome.css. It only became necessary when I installed v61 to get the nicer looking rounded tabs back.

I'll take a look at v60. thanks for the pointer.

Very helpful... I'll report back as soon as I've tried v60.

Ok, Have v60 up and running on my test PC. Have integrated the Photo-Australis CSS for the curved tabs, got the address bar almost sorted. Added a few other customization's from the links you provided.

Just a couple of items remain;

Can you point me in the right direction regarding extracting the old images and substituting them.

In v55 history and book marks are displayed as a separate window. In v60 the are integrated into the browser window as a sidebar. I found a config preference that allowed me to move the sidebar to left or right, but is there a way to get the old behavior back? I often have the history and/or bookmarks window open on a second monitor so that it doesn't interfere with the websites I'm visiting.

thanks

Hi, you can turn on the Menu Bar, Bookmark Toolbar by mousing to the top of the Browser to a Empty Spot and Right Click. or Go to the 3 Bar Menu (far right) and click on Customize and mouse to the bottom left and will find Tool Bars.

You can get the Menu Bar up and will have access to full blown Separate Show All History as well as Separate Show all Bookmarks.

Do note that while in Customize you can go to town dragging stuff to where you want it, also right click the Download Arrow

Thanks for that. Not what I'm looking for though. I'm trying to revert the behavior of v60 to v55 without adding toolbars or displaying the menu bar.

For example, in v55 I click Bookmarks, show all bookmarks I get a separate Window. In v60 I get a sidebar in the main browser window. Same with history.

Most of the "fixes" for these issues seem to end up being an add on, but I haven't been able to find one for this.

No, "Show All x" definitely should open the Library window in Firefox 60 and NOT a sidebar (that's a separate item on the menu). If there's some mismatch between the text label on the menu and what it does, there's something very wrong there.

I stand corrected. In v60 the icon that looks like the Bookmarks icon in v55 (whose tool tip in v55 is "Show your Bookmarks"), is now called "show sidebars" from which history or bookmarks can be selected, but there is no "show all" on those sidebars.

I remove that from the address bar, add back the Bookmarks icon which looks like a star (and is called "BookMark this page" in v55), and the functionality is the same as v55. So names and functionality have changed. My bad.

Hi I did not post all of the above to be wrong. It is all that you requested. If you can not get up what I have outlined in my reply then you have a need to use backup everything :

Use

then put your self back together as what I put out is what I Run. So I am not in no shape or form wrong. You have serious problems if you can not do or get to where I have outlined the capabilities.

How the heck do you get side bars from my instructions. I am left with Why not give your self a format as you have combined too many things that you will never now get corrected.

Geez I didn't mean to upset you so much. I think you're getting way too offended with my response.

My question was all about sidebars. I never made a mention of toolbars or the menu bar. I don't want them, I never asked for them. This is what I said..

In v60 the are integrated into the browser window as a sidebar.

Grammatical error in the above aside, I wanted to get rid of sidebars. I wanted the external library window.

This too... You have serious problems if you can not do or get to where I have outlined the capabilities. is a little too harsh.

I didn't follow your instructions because they were not what I asked for.

Where I am now, which is with FF60 on a Test-PC, the only thing left that I would like to accomplish is to get rid of the dull SVG images and replace them with the more appealing icons that v55 has. Everything else is working fine. Nothing appears to be broken or corrupted.

Can we please keep this on a civil level.
