I think the critical step is when you download the file and remove the extra text. That is, shortening from:

userChrome-color_bookmark_folders.css

to

userChrome.css

If Windows is not set to show .css on file names, you may be tempted to add .css which can cause doubling. I don't know whether it would work any better to right-click > Save Link As on the link and remove the extra text before saving:

Hi ALGENE, the support volunteers here can help you with a workaround -- it sounds like you already know what it is -- but we cannot actually change Firefox.

To submit feature suggestions, you could use one or more of the following (depending on whether you want a suggestion box or a discussion):

Workaround: Using Custom Style Rules to Color Bookmark Folders

This takes about 10 minutes, so when you can set aside time and take it slowly and carefully:

(1) Create a chrome folder in your currently active Firefox profile, by following Steps 1-3 of this page:

https://www.userchrome.org/how-create-userchrome-css.html

I have a demo video there if the text needs some visual context.

(2) Download a custom rule set from my website, and move it into that new chrome folder. This is the file:

https://www.userchrome.org/samples/userChrome-color_bookmark_folders.css

(3) Assuming this is your first userChrome.css file:

After moving the file into your chrome folder, right-click > Rename it and short the name from userChrome-color_bookmark_folders.css to userChrome.css -- then click away to have Windows save the change.

If you already have a working userChrome.css file, copy the rules from userChrome-color_bookmark_folders.css into your current userChrome.css file.

(4) Exit Firefox and start it up again so Firefox reads and applies the rules.

Success?

That should get the folders looking like the second column here:

Hi ALGENE, this is tech support here. There is no official way to change built-in icons. In future releases, add-on authors will have more ability to customize the interface, so perhaps later in the year.

Can you attach a screenshot that shows the location of the userChrome.css file and its content?

more options

here are the screenshots

more options

Thanks for the screenshots. Can you right-click the userChrome.css folder (has the yellow folder icon) and rename that folder to chrome and then test again?

more options

no i did that and shut it down and no it still the same can i take out the last update

more options

The first screenshot hides the userChrome.css line, so we can't see its type.

Could you post that screenshot again and paste the content of userChrome.css in your reply for easier inspection?

here it is top to bottom

I see a stray 'r' as the first character in the first screenshot that you appear to have typed accidentally. Can you remove this 'r'.

Can you show the file path of the userChrome.css file?

more options

Yes, you should remove the double .css and have the exact name

userChrome.css

more options

well i just tried and i cant figure it out it wont let me edit it

You may need to set Windows to show file extensions in order to see the extra .css while you are renaming the file:
