Firefox upgraded by itself and deleted all my tabs, sessions, history, bookmarks & plugins

I woke up today to the latest verion of firefox and all of my stuff gone. I tried going to the firefox folder but no places.sqlite or sessionstore.bak or sessionstore or any of the ways I previously have restored tabs. Seems like the latest version doesn't not use same file types? I tried using a program for deleted files and none of them come up. I tried restoring firefox to a previous version and that didnt work. I tried a system restore and that failed. I NEED these tabs I had a lot of important web pages saved. Please someone tell me how to do this. I am honestly done with firefox this type of stuff just does not happen to me on chrome. I cant even use session manager because firefox deleted that too! Is there any possible way of getting my tabs back? I never gave firefox permission to upgrade in the first place I set it to manual upgrade and it still ruined all my stuff. This is simply unbelievable.

Hi, sorry to hear that. Yes is gone. I do not know why this happens. There are several others here if search : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-session-manager/ You speak of permission. I see you run Windows 10. Microsoft does not ask permission and fyi within the next few weeks the Spring Creators Update will be dumped on us with useless stuff, like it or not. Firefox version 40 was a unsecured browser that had no security updates in years. You should have been on Firefox ESR which maybe you should move to. 52.7.3 ESR. It will continue to get security updates until May 2018, and you can download and install it from this page: *https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ Note : Legacy Extensions will be deleted or removed in any version update after June 2018. Firefox 52.9.0esr out on June 26 (same time as 60.1.0esr) will be the last major update for Firefox 52 ESR apart from any 52.9.x esr updates for security or allowed stability fixes.

Firefox 60.2.0esr will be out Aug 21 and Firefox 52 ESR will be EOL then. So people will have to upgrade to 60.2.0esr to keep getting security updates if they have not manually upgraded to 60.x.o ESR already. Firefox 60 ESR will require Windows 7, 8, 10. You should always make a backup of your Profile : (your sessions would have been saved)

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

So it just got deleted? There is no way I can get my old tabs back? Is there a reason I cant get them back? I see other posts here of people getting their stuff back.

Yea microsoft doesn't ask permission but it also doesn't wipe my hardrive when it updates. I don't mind the "useless stuff" as long as I get to keep MY stuff. This is the equivalent of having everything deleted by a update I did not authorize because I selected manual update. Chrome doesn't do this when it upgrades.

As a Support Volunteer I empathize with your situation. I can not do any thing if the files are not there as you say :

no places.sqlite or sessionstore.bak or sessionstore or any of the ways I previously have restored tabs. Seems like the latest version doesn't not use same file types

If there is on your Desktop a Folder called OldfFirefoxProfile then it maybe possible to restore. Without files it is impossible to do anything.

To submit suggestions for new or changed features, may I suggest: Feedback: https://qsurvey.mozilla.com/s3/FirefoxInput/

First, please stop making system changes until you have a chance to back up available files. Using system restore may cause permanent data loss.

Your Firefox is identifying itself as version 40. What version were you using before the update and what version are you using now?

If you have been using the old Session Manager extension, most likely you were running a pre-Quantum version of Firefox, version 56 or earlier. The version is important because Firefox 56 switched to a new file format for session data (lz4 compressed) that earlier versions cannot read.

(1) Please back up these folders in your profile folder by copying them to a safe location (outside of any Mozilla folder):*

  • sessions (the folder maintained by Session Manager)
  • sessionstore-backups (the folder maintained by Firefox)

(2) Check more recent restore points using a utility program:

First, make sure Windows is set to show hidden files and folders: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files

Next, try one of these programs:

Within each restore point you check, you can explore along this path to a file you might be able to use:

\Users\your-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

If you find something promising, extract it out to a convenient location; don't try to overwrite the current live file.

Did you have any potentially useful session files?

You can preview the contents of a session history file by dropping it on this tool on my website:

https://www.jeffersonscher.com/res/scrounger.html

Even if it can't be restored, you can archive it as a page of clickable links.

* It sounds as though you know how to access your profile folder, but for anyone else reading, use any of these methods:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, on the Profile Folder row, click the "Open Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

By the way, if the update involved Firefox performing a Refresh, the folder on your desktop should be called Old Firefox Data.
