Firefox won't let me sign into my account without yielding a phone number. I don't want firefox to have my phone number, it is unnecessary. How can i sign in?

Please provide a screenshot of the message you are getting. Make sure the Address bar appears in that image. May be a new feature that I haven't seen yet, but strange if a smart phone isn't connected to the Sync account.

See this support article. How do I create a screenshot of my problem? It is best to use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed a maximum file size of 1 MB.

Then use the Browse .... button below the Post a Reply text box to upload the screenshot.

Thanks the-edmeister,

here is a screenshot.

I tried to sign, ff asked me to confirm email address, which I did, then this screen appeared, insisting that I Iink another device & provide a phone number.

The screenshot shows that you are connected to Sync. You can ignore this offer to connect to other (mobile) devices if you do not own such a device or do not want to add more devices.

Thank you cor-el, but there is no option to move beyond this page without entering a valid mobile phone number.

Are you unable to close that tab?

IMO. that is a 'promotional message' to entice Sync users to send Firefox to their smartphone for installation and NOT a limiting factor for using Sync with desktop / laptop Firefox installations.

That page opens with a SMS link:

Did you click any button to go to this page?

What happens when you click on 'Why is more than one device required'  ?

No option to close it there  ?

This page is on my desktop. (Maybe I ought to have mentioned I use Comodo Ice Dragon browser (ff based) & not ff. Though I don't see how this should make a difference.)

The process:

1. Sign into account. [I fill in required fields & hit enter] 2. Confirm email address to continue to add-ons. [I confirm] 3. The window that I have posted above then appears, with no way to move beyond. 4. If I click 'Why is more than one device required' another window pops up stating:

'The Sync service isn’t a permanent backup, it’s simply a secure way to transfer saved bookmarks, history and passwords between your own devices.

You should install Firefox and sync at least two devices to protect against losing your data if you need to restore it but forget your password.'

There is now way to move beyond this, only to close it.

Also, the link you can see in the top right corner 'moz://a' leads to a blank page with this url:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/?utm_medium=Referral&utm_source=firefox-accounts

Thanks.

Actually, the 'moz://a' link I inserted above when clicked from this page leads to a 'Get To Know Mozilla' page...

HI there, I wanted to follow up based on a few clarifying points.

That message does recommend to connect a second device in order to take advantage of some pretty cool features when you do sync more than one device. That includes Synced Tabs, as well as the rest of your profile that you can opt in or out of in your Sync settings.

However, you are referring to a moz://a and implying that it is taking you to the incorrect place. Please first update to the latest version of Firefox, 58. And please can you clarify what is happening to what link? It seems we have gotten off topic from the original question.

The answer is, no a phone number is not required.

I use Comodo Ice Dragon on desktop & ff on mobile. They are currently synced fine. I cannot update to the latest ff on my mobile device since it is android 4 & no longer supported by ff; I tried but had to roll back since it did not work.

We can forget about the moz:lla link, I was just pointing out that it does not take me to where I want to go, hence removing it from the issue.
