How do I edit the URL without leaving the page?

On FF57 Android, I find that if I want to edit the URL, it switches the displayed page. I don't want this. On Chrome for Android, it just dims the displayed page. If I change the URL to javascript:alert("Hello") then it doesn't work on Firefox Android, and even if it did probably wouldn't pick up variables from the page. It works fine on Chrome, and in fact I can have the alert pick up globals from the current page.

I'm trying to check a few things and I need to be able to type URLs without having Firefox leave the page.
