WHY has Firefox has been slow and laggy for MONTHS for my entire household?

ALL "fixes" on site do not work. Or only work for like one day. We are getting really sick of this. We have started using chrome (which we hate, but at least it works). Even typing this is really laggy! Why is Firefox all of a sudden so crappy? IT used to work like a dream. I even tried reinstalling...loosing all my bookmarks because I didn't know you couldn't change your password on sync...I had forgot mine. VERY PISSED OFF about all of this!!!

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
    (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

Note: If it's OK in Safe Mode and you have Adblock Plus, try disabling it first - Add-ons Manager (Ctrl+Shift+A) > Extensions. An alternative is https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin


If Safe Mode doesn't help, you can try disabling Multiprocess: Type about:config into the address bar, press Enter, accept the warning, scroll down and look for browser.tabs.remote.autostart and browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 If either or both exist, double click on either or both to change 'Value' from True to False, then restart Firefox. If there is no improvement, double click the entries again to change back to True. If that was better, try reducing the number of processes from the default 4. To do that: In about:config look for dom.ipc.processCount and right click > Modify to enter a number lower than 4 (the highest number that works is best) then restart Firefox.
