I suddenly cannot get the Yahoo.com web site, including just the main address, www.yahoo.com. I have cleared cache and cookies and everything I could, but it still does not bring it up. I can get Yahoo in Chrome or Explorer. Is this a Firefox or Yahoo problem?

Nothing happens. Doesn't go anywhere. Just stays on a blank page. No other sites seem to be affected. I also tried adding the https, and that didn't do anything either. Thanks!

Do you get the same result if you click a link to Yahoo on another site, for example:

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=yahoo&ia=about


Could you double-check your Firefox connection settings here:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options

In the left column, click Advanced. On the right side, click the "Network" mini-tab and then the "Settings" button.

The default of "Use system proxy settings" piggybacks on your Windows LAN connection settings, but you could try "No proxy" to see whether that makes a difference.

Before I do the LAN settings, something interesting I found. I got to this site using Firefox, from a link on Wikipedia: https://transparency.yahoo.com/ That link got to yahoo's site. Now, when one clicks on 'Home' on Yahoo, nothing happens. But when I click on Mail, it does go to Mail. So now I am wondering if it is a Yahoo problem?

I don't know how many users are affected at this point. It might just be specific Firefox configurations. Hard to say.

I can't think of any other settings you could change in Firefox.

Could you check for error messages this way:

Open a page that has a link to https://www.yahoo.com/ (such as this one) and then open Firefox's Web Console using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+k
  • menu button > Developer > Web Console

This should open a panel in the lower part of the tab that may be empty or may list some error messages. If there are already messages there, click the Clear button.

Then click the link to Yahoo and watch the panel for any new error messages. Anything? You should be able to copy/paste it here.

Along the top of the developer tools panel are buttons, including Network. If you click Network, it should list the URLs that Firefox tried to load when you clicked the link. Anything strange there?

Right before the yahoo domain listed, before the www, it shows a small image of a lock with a diagonal red line through it. I would have attached the whole image of everything, but this does not allow attachments. Thanks for your continued help.

Thanks. The slashed lock probably means that even though you followed an HTTPS link, Firefox didn't successfully make an SSL connection with the site.

I think you said you used Firefox's Refresh feature earlier today. That should clear away any saved certificate that could interfere with a fresh connection. I have to admit I'm running out of ideas.

Note: To attach a screen shot, you first need to save it to an image file, for example using the Paint program included with Windows. Alternately, you can paste it into a site like the following and then provide the link here (but then you might not be able to edit out parts you do not want to show): https://snag.gy/

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Just to let you all know, after seeing the above from Mozilla support, I decided to first run an active scan with my anti-virus software, ESET NOD 32. It worked! Everything is now fine after running ESET and rebooting.
