Hi everyone,

For some unknown reasons, I can't get the password manager visible when I enter a new password on a web site. So no password recorded and I have to fullfil all the information every time I need to enter into my accounts. I tried to restart FF with the safe mode enabled, all add-ons turned off. That doesn't work better. I use AVIRA antivirus, FF 45.0, Win 10 (64). It seems I don't have a software which could create a problem. I have no idea where the problem is... Moreover, I can't find any topic relating to my precise case on the forum.

If someone has an idea, please, let me know. I would appreciate. Thanks in advance. Kind regards,

Hi John99, yetiputer,

Once again, thanks a lot for your help, I appreciate! ;-)

Avira antivirus and its bundled softwares: I have disabled Avira Antivirus, the Firewall and the Avira navigator protection and have entered into my LinkedIn account. Firefox didn’t ask me to memorize my password, it didn’t displayed the password manager. So Avira seems not to be responsible for interfering with Firefox. The next step should be to uninstall Avira and to install another antivirus software like Avast or AVG, but I can’t for the moment.

Reset the Master Password: I did it, no improvement. Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles: “firefox.exe –P” opens just a new window on my computer. You wrote: “Accept the default location offered and choose some short name such as new-one-2016”. Firefox didn’t asked me to accept a default location or to choose a name, a new windows were opened as if I clicked the Firefox launching icon. Obviously, Firefox had the same behavior, no password manager displayed. For your information, I can enter into the password manager window in order to see all the passwords which should be recorded. In my case, this window is empty.

Cookies. I can’t delete the cookies being into Firefox, with the Firefox tool. I can delete the cookies with Google Chrome.

Clean Re-Install: I have reinstalled Firefox following the written process, no improvement.

Firefox repair: I have repaired Firefox with the Firefox site, just after having written my text here-above, as a last chance. The password manager WORKS fine now!!!! It asks me the passwords and I can see them in the password manager window…

THANKS!!!! Have a nice day! Didier33

thank you. is this a recent problem after the firefox 45 update? i've seen a few similar questions where malware was involved in rendering the password manager non-functional. just to be on the safe site, could you run a scan of your system with the free version of malwarebyte's antimalware tool?

more options

Sorry for this late answer. I didn't have this problem before, but I don't know if the new version of FF is involved. Malwarebyte didn't find any threat. I'm currently running a full scan with Avira antivirus, a rapid scan found nothing. For information, Google Chrome is working well, it asks me all my passwords the first time and stores them correctly. So the disfunction is probably linked to FF.

I had problems with logins info and passwords not working for many days and my solution was...

I went to the menu (top-right side opposite URL line) / options / privacy menu on upper left side / history line / and next line: firefox will after unrolling arrow / I choose Remember history.

Good luck, yetiputer.

Edit: do not forget to also visit the Security tab in the same menu / Logins / and tick the box "remember login for sites". At the time of my bug that box was grayed out and was not clickable.

Thank you for this answer. I have also checked this point, "Remember history" is already selected as well as "remember login for sites". I have no site in the "exception" box in the same level than "remember login for sites". I am going to uninstall FF and reinstall it. I will let you know.

Another possibility:

Are you certain that you are not in "private browsing mode" because if you are Firefox will not save or use passwords in that mode.

Your firefox is newer than mine. I have version 44. Maybe someone will be able to help you to rollback to an older version.

My firefox crashed this morning and it was hard to reinstall back on. I had another spare browser but it refuses to reinstall.

Wait to see if an expert will help you.

Hi Didier33, Sorry that we are not managing to help you solve this problem yet.

Does the Firefox password manager work ok to display your passwords, or do you have to remember them all ? Password Manager - Remember, delete and edit logins and passwords in Firefox_viewing-and-deleting-passwords

I suppose it is possible Avira software or some software bundled with that could be interfering with Firefox, and the password manager. (Security related software does sometimes affect Firefox badly, but I have no specific information to say that Avira does affect the password manager.) You could try disabling or temporarily uninstalling such software to see if that helps.

If you are considering giving up on Firefox anyway, or have all your passwords recorded or written down, you could try to reset the master password and start again with passwords to see if they then work

An alternative test that does not endanger the current saved passwords would be to try Firefox with a new additional test profile.

Use

Winkey + R to obtain a run dialogue

Type in or paste

firefox.exe -P

Then press the Enter key to execute & to start the profile manager. Accept the default location offered and choose some short name such as new-one-2016 Does Firefox offer to save passwords when used from the new profile.

IMPORTANT

I know you have reinstalled Firefox. However such standard reinstalls rarely solve problems. If there is any suspicion that Firefox has broken or been corrupted you need to do what we often refer to as a clean install that involves deleting the Firefox program files first.

Clean Re-Install

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove your Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. This process does not remove your Firefox profile data (such as bookmarks and passwords), since that information is stored in a different location.

To do a clean reinstall of Firefox, please follow these steps: Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu New Fx Menu and click the close button Close 29).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

Profile Manger Sorry I did not write good instructions. I forgot to say you must ensure Firefox is fully closed down before trying

firefox.exe -P

You should see the profile manager dialogue. This is an old screenshot but you should see something similar

Note there needs to be a space between the exe and the -P I also did not remember to explicitly say use the create profile option.

There is other methods of creating new profiles, but the built-in profile manager is the easiest method.

Hi John99, yetiputer,

@John99: yes, I see now, with Firefox closed, the Profile Manager now works.

I have forgotten to tell you what with the Firefox repair, I have no add-on anymore. Maybe this point has an importance. Indeed, I told you that I tried unsuccessfully with all add-ons disabled (disabled but not uninstalled). But the repair fired all add-ons and the password manager works well now without any add-on installed. Moreover, when I have reinstalled Firefox (twice), I was surprised that it did not "forget" all my bookmarks. Did I reinstalled it correctly? I'm not sure now. Either an add-on was interfering with Firefox even not being active (because of a file somewhere...) or Firefox had a damaged file not deleted when reinstalling. As I am not an expert, I don't know if one of these hypotheses is right.

@yetiputer: I also believe we worked efficiently. :-)

Hi again Didier33,

Firefox add-ons: the only thing I could suggest is that you should use only the ones suggested by Mozilla-Firefox. Too bad they are not alphabetically listed. Here the the link for them. See the left menu for all the possibilities...

Very good luck to you..... on all fronts and stay safe.

Here is some background information that may be useful

Repair - Refresh The Refresh|Reset option that you use to repair Firefox may one day remember your addons so that you can easily put them back [1] For now we suggest you try to record those yourself. Perhaps bookmark the support, home or download sites of your addons, before you proceed with the Refresh. The Refresh changes the Firefox profile, but it does back that up.

Repair - Clean Reinstall It is important to note this is different from an ordinary reinstall. The ordinary reinstall is not good for fixing problems. The clean install[2] is aimed at deleting program files in case they are corrupt. That's the core stuff that makes Firefox work. So yes you will keep your bookmarks if you use this procedure. It is designed to not lose your data, but to preserve the profile including keeping your bookmarks.

Bookmarks and other data - the Profile See Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data

Signed Addons We obviously see it as a great advantage of Firefox that it is easy to modify and add features using addons. Anyone may write these. They do get checked out. They should do what they say, and importantly should not damage Firefox or your security. They are not always perfect. They may sometimes interact badly with one another or new versions of Firefox. A slightly techie article you probably do not need to look at. it explains the security benefits of this change

You can find the addons here (you can also search from about:addons )

Note you are able to look at them by category then sub category or search, there are many thousands of addons.

Firefox's Safe Mode We did not actually suggest using that in this thread. Often you will see people getting annoyed when this is suggested. They do not want to use Firefox without their beloved addons. It is important to remember it is used as a troubleshooting step. It is not intended as a solution. See Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode

[1.] Refresh That is explained in this article

The feature has evolved. it may improve further. Primarily it a user friendly, simple one click solution, to try to fix some problems. [2.] Clean Install One article explaining how to use the procedure is this one:
