I can't copy my saved backup files to Firefox. I have them in folder.
When I opened Firefox this morning, Ask.com had taken over the Firefox site. I closed and re-opened Firefox and a window appeared asking me to refresh and I did so. That got rid of the Ask.com hack, but all of my bookmarks were transferred to a folder on my desktop. I have tried every solution in the support site and though all files still appear in my profile, I can not get them back on my Firefox opening page. Help!

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac=<Command>)<Shift> A)
In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Remove Ask Anything. Now do the same in the computers Programs Folder.
Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.
After the problem is fixed, Bookmark and use this; Download the Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.

Basically, your old profile was put on the desktop with only bookmarks, passwords and history copied to the new profile.

I'm sorry, could you clarify something. Normally all of your Firefox bookmarks are accessible from these places:
- Main toolbar: the "clipboard"-like icon next to the star
- Bookmarks sidebar (Ctrl+b)
- Library dialog (Ctrl+Shift+b)
- (if the menu bar is displayed) Bookmarks menu
And you can show/hide the Bookmarks Toolbar.
If the problem is with the menu bar or Bookmarks Toolbar, you can use one of these methods to show the toolbar list and select the desired bars there:
- right-click a blank spot on the tab bar (or the "+" button)
- tap the Alt key to activate the classic menu bar > View > Toolbars
- in Customize mode > Show/Hide Toolbars (see: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars)
To turn on the Menu Bar, Bookmarks Toolbar, or other bars, click it on the list.
Was that it, or when you check those various spots are the bookmarks themselves missing?
The bookmarks are missing, but are in the folder titled "old firefox data" on my desktop, and they are in my profile. I have tried everything I can think of.
I think they're just gone. I still don't know how act.com showed up in place of my Firefox opening page.
Thanks for the answers - I got them all back with a system restore. I meant ask.com. They took over my Firefox this morning and caused all this.
