Is it typical that firefox can use 339,600K (shown on task manager and appeared to be working) to show an image? My whole system freezes when this happens

I was looking at images in an email, (PDF) and firefox was running 339,600K and froze my system. Is this typical? It just kept happening I waited, however the screen turned gray (with the email showing beneath) and after about 15 min I decided that was long enough and refreshed the browser (or the little circle arrow). Then I was able to begin again, but it kept happening about every third image. Thanks in advance for your advise

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?
