Sometimes after an update Firefox starts slowly and presents the option to speed up Firefox by restoring some default settings. If you click that button, Firefox performs a Refresh, which moves your settings folder to the desktop inside an Old Firefox Data folder. Do you see anything like that? If so, there's a reasonable chance of restoring missing data from that folder. (Refresh is designed to retain your last session windows and tabs, as well as passwords, but glitches happen...)
