I cannot keep add-on extensions off my firefox, they keep appearing reloaded a day later causing crashes - help

more options

I have had Firefox for years and updated it regularly. It is the best web-browser by far....until recently. I noticed that it became unresponsive when I ran it. Then I noticed huge amounts of CPU usage and memory uptake, which was causing it to freeze. I managed to restart it without add-ons and the problem seemed resolved - yay! Unfortunately the add-ons would reappear the next day. I initially uninstalled them - through tools>add-ons>uninstall. After they reappeared and I was back to where I was initially. Then I do it again, but after uninstalling them I would go to the 'Show folder' on the troubleshooting information page and delete the extensions in the Extension Folder. Next day those extensions are back again - freezing my Firefox.

How is this happening? Why can I not delete 'Adblocker' and other extensions permanently? Help please - as I'm forced to use IE again!

Some extensions may be pushed in by other software on your system. Do you want us to take a look at what you have? You can copy/paste a list of your extensions from the support information page. To open that, use either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Scroll down to the Extensions heading, and you can select and copy the table below it. It will look a little messy when pasted, but don't worry, we're used to that.

If we just assume that some malware is probably involved, here's my suggested procedure for tracking down and cleaning up bad add-ons and other hijackers. I know it seems long, but it's really not that bad.

(1) Open the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Be suspicious of everything you do not recognize/remember, as malware often uses important or innocent sounding names to discourage you from removing it. Take out as much trash as possible here.

(2) Open Firefox's Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • in the Windows "Run" dialog, type or paste
    firefox.exe "about:addons"

In the left column, click Plugins. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions. All extensions are optional; none come with Firefox.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?

(3) You can search for remaining issues with the scanning/cleaning tools listed in our support article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.
