I have not updated firefox in a LONG time because every time I did I had to reset all my settings (where tabs are, which order tabs are added.....) to keep firefox looking and behaving like firefox not chrome.

Well I think I need to update now. So I would like a way to backup all my preferences and settings before I update.

Hmm, I suggest a copy of your entire currently active profile folder, preferably after Firefox has shut down gracefully (i.e., not crashed) so it has reconciled temporary database files and cleaned up nicely. This article has suggestions: Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

But I should note that there have been lots of changes in the past 10 versions so some of those backups probably won't work with Firefox 39 after it is initially installed and the installer imports/converts those older files during the update.

Having more than one version of a program may cause issues. You must remove the older programs. Then get the current full installer.

Then reinstall the latest version.
