Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Are you using a High Contrast theme in Windows?

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own colors.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : Override the colors specified by the page with my selections above

Try "Never" if the default "Only with High Contrast themes" isn't working.

This setting affects background images.

You can look at the NoSquint extension to set font size (text/page zoom) and text color on web pages.

I am not sure how to change to a high contrast theme. That might help and should be standard issue. Finding mspaint in win 8.1 is a daunting task also...

Firefox SafeMode didn't change the backgrounds to a much lighter color?

In safe mode it was just the same. Win 8.1 and several recent firefox versions.

Did you check the default colors?

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors

What setting is selected under "Override the colors specified by the page with my selections above" in the Colors pop-up?

You do not need to change to a high contrast them, but you may be using such a theme in Windows at the moment. Firefox detects this and automatically disables the website colors. If this is an inverted high contrast theme then you see a dark (black) background and light text.

It is an inverted theme. Color override is set to "always" but the boxes above where you can set specific colors are all black...you cannot set them.

It seems to make no difference.

I just had this same problem and found a work-around. Enter ff options, go to Content, Colors, uncheck "use system colors", change drop-down box to "Never", click OK, exit Options by closing the tab (yes, this is not what you want, bear with me, we'll get there). Re-enter settings, go to Content, Colors, select your colors as the color palette options should be visible/selectable now, click OK, exit Options again. Enter Options again, go to Content, Colors, change drop-down box to "only with high contrast themes", click OK, exit Options yet again. This should retain your text/link color settings now. You'll have to repeat that entire ridiculous mess to change your colors every single time, BUT it works and now you can see links in high-contrast mode. Hopefully FF will fix it so that one doesn't have to jump through so many hoops in the future.
