Some videos and I think images have stopped displaying, I can't see this - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/33085911 - but if I post it in facebook I can.
Works in Chrome and I have latest Flash plug-in 18.0.0.194.

I understand that there was something that installed itself, I can suggest a few malware scanners: Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
- Microsoft Safety Scanner
- MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
- Anti-Rootkit Utility - TDSSKiller
- AdwCleaner (for more info, see this alternate AdwCleaner download page)
- Hitman Pro
- ESET Online Scanner
Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one. Windows 8 has antivirus built-in already.

I understand that there are some playback issues for Flash player at a site for example: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/33085911
First let's try the basic troubleshooting to make sure its not hardware acceleration or a third party preference.
I have also tried to test the page and only see an ad for ibbcplayer which from what I understand is only in Europe. Do you have another example or a screenshot as to where the video is not playing?
Thank you!
Thanks very much for the reply and the suggested help. I tried most of the fixes and they didn't work but I've kept getting a very annoying adware thing that somehow sometimes installs itself as a programme and sometimes as an extension and sometimes can perform part of it's effects without appearing in the plug-ins list. It goes by a few names and launches a pop-up on opening a new tab and underlines words in pages that link to ads, so I gave in and reset Firefox, and that's fixed the videos not appearing problem also. So I've a couple of extensions to re-install but it's ok now. I have the 'Old Firefox Data' if that's of any interest or use - it won't upload as an attached zip file.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.
I notice that your System Details list shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize prefs each time Firefox starts. The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created this file and normally won't be present.
You can check its content with a plain text editor (right-click: "Open with"; do not double-click) to inspect the content of the file. The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.
You can delete the user.js file if you didn't create this file yourself.
You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
Windows hides some file extensions by default. Among them .html and .ini and .js and .txt, so you may only see a file name without file extension. You can see the real file type (file extension) in the properties of the file via the right-click context menu in Windows Explorer.
Thanks very much to both of you for the suggestions. I have various pieces of security software and I had done a virus scan and there were some odd things in the extensions folder. All of both of your suggestions are very interesting and I will investigate the user.js file further and I rather wish I had investigated the problem further before re-setting firefox. Anyway as it's all ok now - thanks very much and I'll mark this as solved.
