I tried to delete browsing and web history when closing Firefox and this problem happened with Firefox immediately hanging up not closing except on 'force quit' and then totally not opening at all. It won't open in Safe Mode just zilch happening! Nothing I've tried has worked. I've removed and reinstalled Firefox, it but the same immediately happens. I am an older person and not a tech head! So need some simple instructions. Presently I am using Safari and but would like to get Firefox back and reinstalled again so I can access my book marks. Thanks for your help.

Oops, pressed the wrong key. To continue, Press the button in the screen shot to create a new, blank profile. This will not do anything to the current profile.

If this new profile works, then we can work on copy the old profile to the new.

I received a reply in my gmail but can't find it in here with my question! I tried what was suggested, i.e. downloading the latest Firefox for all languages. I had already deleted my previous Firefox App. and rebooting. But the same problem happened. Firefox refused to open and then the message came up saying that it had closed as soon as it was opened and asking me to open in Safe Mode which I did, but then it hung up and a message came up from Firefox saying "Well this is embarrassing, we can't open your tabs and something else, try deleting these webpages." But then the page was hung up and so I couldn't delete anything just had force quit once again and so am at square one again. Thanks again for any help. Why am I not able to access are answers to my question here in Support? I am in my account of course.

What we will do now is to create a new, blank Firefox profile. Do Not make any changes, just use it as is. Is the problem still there?

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles Windows: 32-bit C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -p 64-bit C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -p Mac: Navigate to /Applications/Utilities. Open the Terminal application. In the Terminal application, enter the following: /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -p Linux: In Terminal run: firefox –P For users who have one or more builds from mozilla.org this will not work. It would be best to have the full path so if you had placed the untared contents in a folder in /home it would be /home/<username>/foldername/firefox/firefox –P An easy way would be not to do it in a terminal but in say a launcher since you have to point it to the firefox script in Firefox folder you can then add –P on end. You can also have the exact "profilename" after the -P so Firefox will start with that Profile.

Hi Fred, I went to terminal and put in what you said. It went to a Profile box. wouldn't open with the Firefox one that was highlighted there, so I clicked for a new profile which then opened Firefox to begin a new account. I am not sure what to do now. If I open a whole new Firefox account how do I access my previous book marks? I don't want to lose those. Thanks for your help. Can you keep directing me with the next steps and how if possible to keep my book marks. I think if I remember correctly I had this problem once before when I tried to delete browsing/web page history and that time I had to do something with my profile in Library or somewhere. Sorry I can't remember. Thanks again.

Right now, we just want to get Firefox to work. All of your data is safe in the old profile. Once FF is working, we will transfer some of the old profile to the new one.

Fred when u say to create a new blank Firefox Profile I am not sure what you mean. Do u mean I do a new Firefox account from that Firefox page I sent a screen shot of, to you? If so how can it be blank, because I have to put in my personal details. Sorry I am a bit challenged in understanding some of this! :)

Use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

Are you using "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear personal data like the Cookies?

To see all History and Cookie settings, choose:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"

Ok I did that and it brings up the Page I sent you the screen shot of. See below. In that page it says: "Sign into Firefox and you're good to go" then you have the option of starting a new Account OR signing in with your present account. So what do I do? start a new Account in which case I have to put in my personal details, Or continue with my current account. This is where I am stuck and don't know how to continue. Thanks again for your patience and help. Much appreciated.

Hi Fred, I've just had another look at the Firefox page that came up and I see I can access my add ons, plugins etc. Do I have to disable any of these. The only ones not on 'always ask to activate' are: OpenH264 Video Codec provided by Cisco Systems, Inc and Unity Player 4.3.7f1 Otherwise no book mark are there or history. Actually I'd wanted to delete history to see if it would fix an error message I was getting in Firefox in my Bank account web page. But trying to delete all that was when the initial problem began! Ok let me know what I need to do next. Thanks again!

Hi Fred, FIrefox 38.0.5 has just started working normally again!! Don't know what happened. I put the plugin Shockwave Flash 18.0 r0o on 'Ask to Activate' from 'always activate', so I don't know if that helped, but Firefox is now working and all bookmarks etc are there as before. Have you any idea what caused Firefox to do this? Was it trying to delete the browsing and download history on closing Firefox? Cause one other time it happened the same, except I did something that time with Profiles. Not sure what which got it going again.

So Thanks heaps again for all your help. If you can tell me what NOT to do so I don't have this problem again that would be great!

Kind regards,

The page in your screenshot is about setting up a Firefox account that you can use with Sync.

Did you try to remove the checkmark on "Clear history when Firefox closes" (i.e. disable this feature) ?

Hi Cor-el, I have now disabled "clear browsing and download history" but not "active logins and form and search history", which are still activated to clear when Firefox does. They don't seem to be the problem. It seems to be trying to clear the browsing and download history that causes the problem as its happened before. However as I mentioned above. Firefox is now working as before with no problems. Its just that I am wondering why trying to clear browsing and download history causes this problem which means I can never do that on closing Firefox.
