I received an e-mail in Thunderbird ,after reading, sent it to dustbin or to archives, I don't recall. In either case I deleted the mail. I tried "Recuva"programm, which I badly understand, no result. What can I do?

If you deleted the email then it will be in the 'Deleted' or 'TRash' or 'Deleted Items' folder - different names depend upon whether you are using a US or UK version or imap folder.

To find out where it went: Tools > Activity Manager or Menu icon > Activity Manager It willl say whether it deleted message or archived it and give the time, so you can work out what occured.

To immediately undo a Delete. 'Edit' > 'Undo Delete Message' or use Ctrl +Z

Otherwise: Select the 'Deleted' folder locate the deleted mail, then either use drag and drop to move back or right on email and use the 'Move to' and select the folder.

If you 'archived' the email then it will be the 'Archives' folder.

If you happen to use imap gmail, then all archived items are put in the 'All Mail' folder. As it is not ideal to subscribe to the All Mail folder, suggest you logon to webmail account and look in 'All Mail' and apply the Inbox label / move back to Inbox.

Thanks for your reply. I am affraid that is further away than you described. I deleted it from the "bin" or "archives". That's why I used "Recuva", no results. If you have any other suggestion, please let me know. I hope you understand my english, I am dutch. w.j.

Matt, thanks. I tried everything. I downloaded: "recover Deleted Messages-04xpi", but could not open it. I could not download " Freeviewer ", the message was "something went wrong, try again". The Kaosmos-link was "unsafe".Your idea transporting the icon to the add-page, did not work, probably my fault. I am just a simple computer user, so I dare not to go too far into the stuff.

Is there any other solution? w.j.

re :I downloaded: "recover Deleted Messages-04xpi", but could not open it.

You do not open it. After downloading the .xpi to eg: Desktop or Downloads folder.

how to install addon:

In Thunderbird. Tools > addons or Menu Icon > Addons

click on gear wheel icon and select 'Install addon from file. locate the .xpi file you just downloaded and click on 'open'. you may need to restart Thunderbird at the prompt.

Assuming you are using either Pop mail account or synchronised subscribed folder of an imap account.

If you had Archived the email then it would be searchable in the Archive folder.

So, assuming it was originally in the Inbox when you read it. Assuming you deleted it and have not compacted the Inbox, there is also this method:

First make hidden files and folders visible: The AppData folder is folder is a hidden folder; to show hidden folders, open a Windows Explorer window and choose "Organize → Folder and Search Options → Folder Options → View (tab) → Select: Show hidden files and folders". More help:

In Thunderbird.

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • click on 'show folder' button
  • a new window opens showing Profile folder name files and folders.
  • Close thunderbird now - this is important

If Pop:

  • click on 'Mail' folder

If IMAP:

  • Click on 'ImapMail'
  • Click on mail account name
  • Look for 'Inbox' file (not 'Inbox.msf')
  • open 'Inbox' (no extension) using Notepad

Newer emails will be appended to the end of the document, so if the email was a recent one, then it is likely to be near the bottom.

  • Use the 'EDit' > 'find' to search for X-Mozilla-Status: 0009. The 0009 means marked as deleted.

check that email is the one you want. There will be a load of headers, so you can check the Subject - the actual email content will be after the header.

  • change/edit the 0009 to say 0001
  • Save the file.
  • then delete the 'Inbox.msf', to force Thunderbird to reindex the Inbox.
  • Restart Thunderbird.

that email should reappear in the Inbox.

Matt, and other responders. Thanks for your efforts, but help came from quite another direction. My deleted e-mail was about an attractive offer from Dutch Railways to regular clients (which I am), and to my surprise, they once again published this offer. I have used it immediatly. Nontheless I will study and try your solutions together with a friend who is more into computers than I am, because it all is interesting and usefull for future delete mistakes. Cheers, w.j.
