For several time after updating to Firefox 36.0.1and now to 36.0.4 I am getting sporadic crashes of Firefox where Firefox goes black and at the same time my NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 will crash and stop working but will recover. There is no crash report for Firefox to send and I have to restart it. This happens after I have done a lot of scrolling or have been watching some videos. This only started happening starting with the 36.0.1and now it has start on the 36.0.4 update. I have reinstalled Firefox and refreshed Firefox and mu plugins are up to date. I am using Win 7 Home Premium 64 BIT , 8.00GB of Mem, Intel Quad Core at 2.50 Ghz .

You are using a driver from 2010. Try a modern driver. http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/82467 appears to be the latest for your card.

Tyler I have updated the diver and will keep this question open so I can get back with you to give an update. I noticed there are 2 others having this problem so are their drivers out of date as well?

Thank you, Don

Just as you update programs, you should also check the drivers as well.

I hope it helps! Also make sure that all Windows updates are installed, and just as a precautionary thing, scan for some malware. Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware

As for others with this problem, they should try updating their drivers as well.

Hi Tyler,

I had to roll back my NVIDIA driver to the one I had before which was sp46254.exe Version 8.17.11.9732 . This was a special driver update from NVIDIA for HP where as the original NVIDIA drivers were having problems. The updated one I installed that you suggested was causing my system to boot slowly and it was putting my monitor to sleep when booting to Windows for several seconds and then waking up. Everything is back to normal now. I have put my power setting to High Performance whether that will help or not. The crash problems are only happening with Firefox since the 36.0.1 and the 36.0.4 updates. I have intensely used IE 11 and no crashes have occurred as of yet and I have not experienced any NVIDIA crashes with any other program on my computer that I use. I have scanned my entire computer with Malwarebytes , Norton Internet Security and Microsoft Safety scanner and nothing malicious was found. I think that possibly that this problem and since several others are having the same problem, should be kicked up to Mozilla analysts.

I am a Mozilla analyst :)

This isn't a widespread issue, it seems to be very local to your machine as I haven't seen anyone else with this issue. I'd suggest checking HP's website for a newer version of the HP specific driver (this is part of the reason HP's suck), and if that fails, disable hardware acceleration. Turning off hardware acceleration

Hi Tyler,

I checked with HP about any new NVIDIA updates for my machine model and there are none except for the one I have installed. I did disable hardware acceleration and I have had no problems. Firefox opens much faster and I get a better response when moving around websites. I did however managed to pull up my crash reports that were able to have been sent so I thought I would send them to you to take a look at when you have time. Thanks for working with me on this and I will keep you updated.

Respectfully, Don

Thanks for the crash reports. They would actually be much more useful if you copied and pasted them rather than a screenshot so then I don't have to type them all out :)

It's possible that we may need to deploy a block so that hardware acceleration doesn't try to run on this specific driver and hardware version. I'll investigate more later today.
