whenever I create a bookmark and the window opens to give it a name, or when opening my download's drop down window they pop-up in un-readable areas of my screen i.e. I have an eyefinity system, so they are opening up right smack in the middle of my monitor bezels :( highly frustrating, I stuck with firefox 20(something) for the longest time on account of the new firefox UI changes, and it's just been nothing but a gigantic pain to get it working smoothly again.

anyhow, if you know what I could do or could recommend an add-on I be be *extremely* grateful!

Your system details says you are running v35. What are you running?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode;

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?

Hi Michelle, the little dialogs are designed to drop down from the toolbar buttons themselves. Are you saying your toolbar spans multiple monitors so the dialog is split between the two screens? In that case, you could try moving the icons to one end of the bar or the other. If you go into the Customize mode, you should be able to drag them around.

See: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars

Does that help?

Fred, yes, 35.01

jscher, I had that thought too, moving the buttons around, didn't work tho, the side that the window opens up on just swaps position LOL I mean I can see mozillas intention, it's to keep the pop up windows off the browser screen. they way I've been dealing with this is before checking downloads or making a bookmark I scale my browser smaller and then perform the action, then stretch out the window back to normal. is super annoying :(

ok.... I'll try to explain my setup a bit better. I have three monitors in a horizontal configuration (6048x1080) and my browser takes up the entire center monitor, to the left and right of the center monitor is a strip of real estate that's like 144 pixels wide (this is "bezel compensation" if you're unfamiliar with eyefinity) this strip is unseen behind the physical bezels of my monitors. this compensation is to make images appear consistent and not cut off. here's an example I found in an image search http://www.dexonsystems.com/images/innovations/8_bezelcompensation_2010.6.10.jpg

so with my browser in full screen on center monitor, I make a bookmark or check my downloads, the window pops up in this bezel area totally unreadable and hidden from view.

thanks for the replies you guys.

and oh, btw! this never happened on older versions of firefox

I can't think of a good reason for full screen to push the dialog off to one side or other other.

You can try renaming the settings file that stores information about window and dialog sizes. That file may have become corrupted.

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window showing files and folders.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename xulstore.json to something like xulstore.old

Start Firefox back up again. Any improvement in the dialog positions?

Note to self: selector for the Edit This Bookmark dialog is #editBookmarkPanel and it can be moved around by setting margins.

Thanks for the help jscher, but it's still doing the same thing...

I don't understand your note to self, is this something I can edit? I'm not able to find that anywhere

My note to self is for possibly writing custom style rules to position the Edit Bookmark dialog manually. However, I haven't come up with any rules that actually work.

You could possibly drag the star button on the Navigation Toolbar to a different position on the Navigation Toolbar, if the drop-down list is tied to that button.

oh, ok! thanks jscher for trying anyhow...

cor-el, I just tried that and apparently it isn't. thanks for the suggestion tho.
