You may have turned on caret browsing <F7> by accident.

Caret Out {web link} Disables change of the caret browse mode by shortcut key(F7).

hi fred, i'm sorry but this didn't help me. i read that my toshiba satellite does not have function keys. so, i can't disable any. it's very frustrating. i ended up clearing my entire computer and starting over from scratch. still have the same issue. i must have hit some key by mistake, because it was working fine last week. from one day to the next i am in the middle of a nightmare. thanks for all your help.

Don't you have a key that has Fn on it? Like maybe the lower row of keys near the left corner? I'm not familiar with Toshiba laptops, but my Asus EeePC netbook (fits in my winter jacket pocket) not only has a full set of function keys, but it has a Fn key in the lower-left corner between the Ctrl key and the "Windows" key.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.
