Using 31.3.0. Crashes in safe mode -- sending, opening add-on man, using help/restart with add-ons removed, or within 3 minutes, whatever first. Reinstalled 2x.

Hello. I am using 31.3.0. and it is crashing in either safe mode or normal mode under any of these conditions: -- within 4 minutes -- after sending, -- opening add-on manager -- using help/restart with add-ons removed. I've reinstalled twice. Up-to-date Yosemite. Thus, I am unable to install viewabout and am unable to disable add-ons before crashing. I don't remember installing add-ons, but they seem to be a common source of crashes, so perhaps I did. But... can't look. May I please bother someone for a suggestion? Thank you for any help!

Hi rbfreemontana, I am not very familiar with Thunderbird crashes or the Mac platform, but I noticed that right before the crash Thunderbird tried to run something called "fbplugin" and there is a corresponding bug report referring to the "Facebook Photo Uploader" having problems on Yosemite. Can you find that add-on and either disable or remove it?

I'm having a very similar issue, I posted about it an hour or two ago. Maybe someone can solve both of our issues.

Having read all the knowledge base docs and many threads from a few different key word searches, I notice that all the given solutions require actions that crash T-bird on my computer. I'm not having the same problem with a couple other mailers and I've communicated with my ISP to confirm the problem isn't on their end. So, for now it seems like a T-bird issue, but I'm not technically competent to assert that it is. But, the obvious upshot is that I won't be using T-bird until I solve the problem. As usual, eventually other folks will experience the problem and attract some attention to it and the show will go on (thanks to countless open-source-minded people). So, no worries.

Hi rbfreemontana, are you able to access your crash reports in the Library folder? See:

https://support.mozilla.org/kb/mozilla-crash-reporter#w_viewing-reports-outside-of-thunderbird

~/Library/Thunderbird/Crash Reports/submitted/

The reports should contain a crash ID that will enable volunteers to view the data in a more digestible form on the crash stats server.

Hi rbfreemontana, yes, forget Viewabout. Try the part about using Finder to open the ~/Library/Thunderbird/Crash Reports/submitted folder and then looking at the individual files. There should be more detail in the article I linked to. Does that work?

Hi Jscher,

That directory doesn't exist on my computer. The nearest is /Library/Mozilla/ with one file, Global.regs.

BTW, thanks for the suggestion, anyway! I appreciate any leads.

Sometimes the Library you're looking for is hidden. It gets confusing with so many Libraries. I've found one of the easiest ways to get to it is to go to any Finder window, go to the Go dropdown menu from the menu bar and press Option while it's selected. While pressing Option "Library" should appear about halfway down the menu

Djunknown, thanks for that tip. Do you know why it's hidden? It seems like a good one to include in the knowledge base.

But, I do have the crash id. I'll go back through the messages and knowledge-base docs later and try to make sense of it.

Thanks again.

Hi Jscher,

Unfortunately, launching Add-ons manager (which to my knowledge is necessary to remove plugins) seems to crash T-bird -- always within 2-3 seconds.

Strange to say, I don't remember ever installing that facebook app., and I certainly haven't used it to my knowledge. I try to be very frugal with the add-ons.

I do occasionally upload a photo via firefox and notice a disabled facebook video chat plug-in (that won't let me uninstall). Again, I don't get it because I'm not at all interested in facebook vid chatting.

Strange world.

Thanks JScher and Djunknown for trying to help me unravel this one. I appreciate community support.

JScher did identify the problem but I didn't know how to implement it. I got some help on that with this thread on Mozillazine. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=2899703&p=13947725#p13947725

The solution was eliminating the FB photo upload plug-in, which I was able to do by unhiding the user/library using a checkbox in the show view options.
